  1. Wildflower Village is actually a number of businesses, but the open mic takes place in their cabaret and coffee shop. Also, they have their own parking lot. The place serves coffee and tea, other nonalcoholic beverages, but also beer, wine and some mixed drinks. To eat they offer bagels and muffins. The cabaret room seats about 30.
The open mic is run by Norm. He has been doing this room for 3 years. It is for comedy only, and goes from 9pm to 10:30pm. Signup is 8:30, and it’s first come first choice. Talent gets 15 minutes, but if there’s a big turnout – they’ve had 14 before – obviously the stage time is reduced. There are no language restrictions. Norm believes if parents are taking children to a room known for comedy, they’re making up their minds they’re okay with potential language.
There is no stage. Norm sets one mic up on the floor, but because of the intimate size of the room and how quiet the venue is, it’s plenty okay, and the lighting is very good.
It was a low turnout, the night I went up. I was the first to sign up, and only one other comedian showed up to perform. I went up first after Norm opened with a set. I play for two civilians, our host, and the other comedian. There was one more civilian in the other room where they serve drinks who could hear my set. I actually had a great time. No one was afraid to laugh. I even got an applause break.
Guys, Reno has more open mic than I originally believed. This room is hit or hit. By that, I mean even if the turnout is low, the audience is still very receptive. No inhibitions here. One audience member even insisted on giving me a hug when the evening came to a close. Sure, it would be great to double the laughs by doubling the size of the room. And Wildflower has those nights. But either way, as much as Reno purports to be the Biggest Little City, wherever you’re staying, probably Wildflower is 15 minutes of less from your hotel. If you have no other venues to go to on Tuesday, go to this one.
