Wednesday Mic at Third Street Bar

  1. Third Street Bar boasts being the longest running open mic for comedy in Reno at nine years. That could very well be true. Other open mics I’ve gone to in the Reno area have gone on longer, but they were open to all genres of talent, not just comedy, like Third Street.
Parking is a paid lot next door to Third Street, but it’s only $2. The business is a bar only; they serve no food. The venue goes from 9:30pm to 11:15pm. There are ten spots only, and talent gets 5 minutes each. There are no language restrictions. A single mic is set up on a stage in the corner of the bar. Overall, the place seats about 70.
There was a guest host running the room the night I showed up. His name was Kevin, and he was last week’s winner in the comedy competition. (Yes, there is a weekly competition at Third Street.) Patrick normally hosts each week, and you can signup with him via Facebook to get a spot. Walk-in talent may go up after the competition, time permitting. The night I was to go up, there were 3 no-shows, so everyone got an extra minute. After the competition, one additional comedian went up, doing 5 minutes.
Kevin went around the room before the show began, asking what spot each comedian wanted. I took the 8th spot. Talent are comped one drink, so, I think, everyone is a winner. There were 25 people in the room when the evening started. The show ends with the winner of last week’s competition doing a 15 minute set, but because Kevin hosted, the featured spot went to the runner-up. Also, your bar tab for the night is comped, if I heard right. The winner’s bar tab.
I thought I did pretty well, but the winner of this week’s competition went to a regular. Decisions were made based on the amount of applause each comedian got when they went back on stage and were re-introduced to the audience. The two who got the most applause were not even the funniest that night, but they brought the most people. Personally, my vote would have gone to the guy who followed me.
Oh well. I’m still a winner. I got a comped drink and got to do a rockin’ room. The comedians are very supportive, laughed when they heard something funny. Sure, as an outsider, you’re probably not going to win any competition, but it’s still a good room with a healthy-sized audience.
And, by default, you should do this room because it was the only venue in the area I found on a Wednesday.
