Disclaimer first. I won a comedy contest at Waltz- Astoria. Ok, you heard it from me. This is a Mom and Pop operation. 50 people it's crowded. It caters mostly to singer songwriters. Everyone gets 10 minutes stagetime. Costs $10 for food and or drink. The warmth and respect the audience feels for the entertainers is palpable. Easy to park there. Not far from the N train. A great place. My name is Phil O'Reilly
Really good spot. It's a nice break from the mic scene and performing for some non-comics makes it easier to gauge the strength of your tags and set-ups. And actual laughs on punches don't hurt either ...
I'm going to assume you're not a pro. Open mics are notorious for having mostly comics. who will not laugh much, because a lot of comics are insecure. A minor laugh at an open mic could equal an applause break at, say, The Comedy Studio.
I had a great time at this mic. Of course i was "on" that night i performed so of course i cant complain but since you want something negative, the place is far & in the middle of Queens nowhereville. Host is mad cool & staff is really nice & laughed at my jokes. oops, there i go again being partial! :/ anyways, its cool cause u get to see musicians which gives you material to riff off of. (lots of Fs there without using the word fuck... cool!)
Well-run mic! Magicians, musicians, poet and comics! Craaazeee. There was a full-on Sikh comic and that was fun. So Queens! The host reallly respects performers and takes the mic seriously and that was refreshing. You have to buy at least $10 worth of food or drink to get on stage. When I went there was a loong list, so get there early to sign up. I arrived at like 7:50 and went up at 10:40 (or maybe it was 11:40??) Bottomline: it was late. I plan on going back to this mic.
This place never cease to amaze me, The overall aura comradery and collectiveness of this open mic is uncanny. The dichotomy of performers and unpredictability and incongruity is what undeniably makes this one of the best open mic in NYC. Ironically it surpasses most of the prime location open mics.
I've explored this environment quite frequently to say the least, Its dichotomy is such an irony, it defies the consonance of entertainment possibilities. The waltz is an entertainment ironic dichotomy in an unorthodox oblivion. Basically in layman's term, In the most unorthodox of places is where we find various congruence of open mic completeness.
To summarize the waltz, 'Analogically' imagine being stranded on an island and discovering gold. This is not a statement of condescension, rather it's exploring the situational dichotomy and ironic nature of the beast. Location is not conducive to quality or quantity, what equates quality is collective individuality...!
Long Live Waltz Astoria, A magnificent competitor excluded in luxury, an experience your naivety will perish in a false sense of folly.
I guess it's nice in that the 10$ cover keeps the riff raff away. Only rich open mic performers can play at this exclusive club. And as we all know in our hearts, rich people are better. When I was here years ago I enjoyed being encouraged to spend the 10$ because that fuels our country's and, in turn, the world's economic growth. Also being 10$ poorer is a great motivator to go out there and make something of yourself so you can come back to this open mic and perform for other members of the amateur elite.
