  1. The night I performed open mic at Schilling’s, called “Hear You Loud & Queer”, they were celebrating their one-year anniversary. Signup is on FB, but they also have walk-in signups. However, because it was their anniversary, when I arrived at 6:22pm, every one of the 20 slots was filled. No walk-in signups that day. However, one of the two hosts, Mack, came up to me later in the evening and said the first comic had to cancel, because they were not feeling well, so I got the spot. Yea.
The mic is open to all genres of talent, but chiefly they attract comedians. In fact, the night I was there, everyone did standup, except one woman who played the ukulele, but her lyrics were meant to make the audience laugh, so, in effect, it was all comedians that night. Again, signup is online, and you may do so a day in advance. Walk-in signups start at 6:30pm. There are no language restrictions, but they did emphasize no Hate Humor, and performers were given four minutes, the light at three. Parking is on the street, and it is difficult. Give yourself plenty of time to drive around and look for a spot.
The business is all about hard cider, but they also offer comfort food like wings and corn dogs. There is no stage. Two mics, so both hosts can talk together, are set up in one corner, visible to all 40 seats in the room, so there is no bad place to sit and watch the show. A stand for one of the mics can be used, or you can talk into the second mic and not use the stand. The backdrop are windows, so you can see people outside the business, and next to the mic are glass doors leading to the patio. Sometimes people came in while talent was performing, but it really wasn’t much of a distraction. The room is run by two women, the other woman being Ally. Both take turns bringing talent up, and Mack is the one to give you the light.
The room started a little late, 7:12pm, and I counted 26 in the room, including staff. The hosts welcomed everyone and did a few minutes of humor, utilizing a slide show on a projector, as part of their comedy. Afterwards, they brought me up, first talent, and the evening took off from there. Everyone did well for the most part. The energy stayed high throughout the evening, and attendance dropped a little towards the end with 19 in the room. The mic ended at 9:05pm.
Guys, this is a room to do. Don’t be intimidated if you’re not queer. All are welcomed to perform. I was visiting from out of state, yet I felt quite welcomed, both by my fellow performers, as well as the general audience. I sat at a table and the women opposite me engaged in pleasant conversation with me before the room began. It’s quite the friendly environment. Yes, parking can be a pill. Maybe Uber or Lyft is the way to go, if you’re visiting. This is a monthly mic, so it’s a privilege if you make the list and get to perform.
Happy anniversary, Ally and Mack and Hear You Loud & Queer. May your room flourish, and here’s to another year of success and more.
