  1. The night I signed up to do this room, I learned it was only their third time they had open mic. They started in April, 2024, and it is a bi-weekly room, happening on the first and third Wednesday of the month. It is standup only. Parking is on the streets, but it’s free. The signup sheet comes out at 6:30, and there are 20 slots. Talent gets 3 minutes, but the night I performed, we were given 5. I think that’s because they only had 12 or 13 signups. There is a featured act who gets extra stage time, and at the end of the evening the audience votes on who gets to come back to the next show to be the featured act. There are no language restrictions.
The room is run by a gentleman named Charles, and they have a DJ, Brandon, who plays the talent on and off stage. The DJ asked me what song I wanted to have playing when I walked to the stage, which was a first for me in all the mics I have done, where I was asked what music I wanted to be played on stage. Sadly, they did not have my song choice, so I went up to whatever Brandon decided. The stage held a mic, stand and stool.
The stage is a platform stage, and it can easily be seen by most of the room, about 60 seats can see the stage. The neon sign behind the stage reads “Integrity Comedy”, and the host has a remote control to operate a fog machine, which he set off quite often during the evening. The business emphasizes a selection of beers, but they also offer some hard alcoholic drinks, wine and cider. They also serve comfort food like Caesar salad or a burger. Pints of beer run $7. The room has 4 TVs, three of which were on and stayed on during the show, but they were muted. At the wall opposite where the stage is, they have a pinball machine and other arcade games, but no one played them during the show.
I got the ninth spot, and the room started at 7:02pm, and I counted 21 in the room. This week’s featured talent went up second. Attendance increased to 29 by 7:35pm, and mostly everyone stayed till the end. I tried out a lot of new material, and I did reasonably well. However, when it came time to vote at the end of the evening who will feature their next show, I knew I would not be chosen. Th evening ended a couple minutes before 9pm.
Guys, this is a good room to do. I told Charles after the show how much I appreciated he takes the time to run a room for comedians to practice their sets. I hope Integrity Comedy becomes a permanent fixture in Portland. I’m certain the business sees an increase in sales, as the room attracted a healthy-sized audience. That the DJ asks what music you want to be played on stage is such a bonus, assuming they have your preferred song.
