  1. Open mic at Friends And Family is for standup only. No music or poetry. Parking is on the street, and it is free. The room goes from 3pm to 4:30, and there is a one-item purchase required to go up. Talent gets four minutes, the light at three, given by the host from the side of the room. There are no language restrictions. There are 20 slots on the signup sheet, and the lineup is done by lottery.
The mic is run by a gentleman named Jake. The room is relatively new, going on three months. There is no stage, but wherever you sit, you can definitely see the talent. The mic takes place in a room separate from where business is done and it seats about 22. The business itself emphasizes coffees and teas, but they also serve a few beer choices as well as other non-alcoholic beverages. To eat, the café serves brunch foods, salads and sandwiches, and a variety of sweets.
The host Jake arrived at 2:05pm, carrying his equipment, which he set up at the center area along one wall: a mic, stand and sound system. The bathroom is located on the other side of that wall, but people using it were good to wait when returning to not cross while someone was performing, so as not to distract from the talent.
We had nine signups as of 2:55pm, but once the room started, all the slots were filled, and Jake even went over and allowed two additional talents to go up beyond the 20 maximum. The mic started at 3:04pm when the host welcomed everyone, did a few minutes himself, then announced who was on deck and brought up the first talent, selecting ping pong balls with numbers on them that coincide with the number on the signup sheet by your name. There were 16 people in the room when we started but that increased to 18 minutes later and 20 while the first comic was performing. That number stayed consistent, as I counted 20 again at 3:45pm.
Music plays between talent, and the room moved along briskly. The audience was pretty good about laughing when they heard something funny, and not many comics were absorbed in their phone or notes that I could see, but were paying attention to those on stage. I was one of the last comics to go up at 4:20pm, playing to 17 people in the room. We went a little overtime because of the additional signups, but even so, again, this room moved along swimmingly.
Guys, this is a good room to do. If you have to pay an admission fee, I prefer a purchase over paying cash, as we have to eat and drink at some time during the day. The people attending are not only good about paying attention, but they will laugh if your material is good. Jake is a very good emcee and a friendly gentleman. That the room takes place so early definitely allows talent to hit a second and even a third mic before 9pm. Start your comedy on a Sunday early by doing this room.
