  1. I have reviewed Kelly’s on another day, but, with a bit of a recap how the room looks, here is my experience on a Thursday.
Parking is on the street; it is paid and costs $2 for two hours. This room has been going on for six months, and a woman named Shannon Hunt runs the mic and also produces open here at Kelly’s on another day. Talent gets four minutes, the light at two. This room is for standup only. There are no language restrictions. The room seats 25 and is separate from the bar, very quiet. Anyone found where the mic takes place is there for just that. The stage is nice, with a black curtain and Kelly’s logo as a backdrop. The venue is called “Happy Hour Open Mic” and the peeps there were happy. Beers are $5.
There were already 17 names on the list when I showed up at 5pm. Talent contacts Shannon and lets her know they want to perform. Walk-ins are fine, but you’re at the end of the list unless there is a dropout. When we started at 5:40pm we had eight people total in the room, including the host and the sound tech, Joe. A few minutes later we had 10 people and 14 people by the second talent introduced on stage, 16 peeps by the third talent.
Because of a cancellation, Shannon slipped me in the lineup. I played to 22 peeps at 6pm and had a terrific time. People kept coming in, supporting the room. By 6:25 we had 23 people. I was reminded how popular this room was on the other day it takes place, and how this is the go-to room for standup, certainly among the most popular.
Guys, this is a room to do. It can be the first of three on a Thursday night, so make a point to do it. Shannon knows to keep the mic moving at a fast pace, don’t give the audience a chance to leave. One after the other talent went up and gave it their all to a room filled with comedians but also a general audience supporting the room. If your jokes were good, they got a response. It wasn’t a room full of peeps waiting their turn. They paid attention.
Do yourself a good deed and make this a room to kick off your Thursday. Separated from the bar, anyone attending is there for the mic. You’ll feel it when you do this room.
You can thank Shannon for that.
