Open mic at Portals Tavern used to be on Mondays (Tuesdays during football season) but finally moved to Tuesdays permanently. The format is still the same. The room is for standup only. There is no stage, but where talent stands they are elevated above the main floor and overlook both the bar and the seats on the floor. One mic is set up. Two TVs are running, but the one closest to the mic is muted. The business is a full bar, and it seats about 35. The bar does not serve food, but offers snacks like bags of chips and Slim Jims. No one under 21 is admitted. Parking is on the street. The open mic has been going on for almost five years, but the current host, Jeremy, has been running the room since January of 2017. There are no language restrictions. Talent gets ten minutes, the light at nine, and the room goes till the last comedian has gone up. Jeremy arrived 8:15pm and the signup sheet came out 8:20pm. I was the first comedian to arrive. I took the fourth spot. The room started at 9:08pm. Ten people, including the host and bartender, made up the manifest. Jeremy launched right in with the jokes. The TV closest to the stage was shut off at this point, and the second TV was muted. The room already decreased to eight peeps by the time the first comic went up, and even he bolted after his performance. I ended up going up third and played to eight people. The rest of the room stayed and supported one another till the end. In the end, five comedians had gone up. We were done about 10:20pm. Guys, this was a good room. Save for the first comedian, everyone stayed to support. Another talent came in after the first open micer left, and that person also stayed till the end. The bartender enjoyed himself, and some of the general audience was there for the first time seeing open mic, having not gone to Portal Tavern on Tuesdays before. And they had a good time, and that’s what matters. I can imagine this room months from now having a following both with talent and people just there to see a night of comedy.
