Tuesday Mic at The Open Book

  1. Open Book is a used bookstore. But don’t be fooled by the business. They actually have a nice stage; it’s a platform stage about a foot high with two mics set up. Rows of books on shelves on wheels are pushed to either side and chairs are set up all facing the stage. Parking is not a problem, as there is a big lot.
The room is run by Will and Angie. They are the current hosts and producers of the mic. The room has been going on two and a half years. While they did not go on stage themselves, from the back of the room they announce the next talent.
All genres of talent are welcome. Each performer gets ten to 15 minutes. Language is permitted, but “read the room”. If you see children in the audience, no bad language. Signup is first come first choice. The room averages ten to 12 talent. Though it boosts going from 6pm to 8pm, if the list of signups is huge, they may go past 8pm till everyone has gone up. The night I performed they had 14 chairs out with collapsible chairs off to the side if necessary. A tip jar is located by the signup sheet at the entrance.
I arrived 5:36pm. First one here. I was given signup sheet, and I took the third spot. The evening started late. We did not get underway till 6:13pm. There were 11 people in the room when we started. Perhaps we started late because our hosts were hoping more people would show. The first talent went up without an intro. He did three songs. By 6:20pm, 20 people were in the room.
I went up 6:40, give or take. I did maybe 10 or 11 minutes. The audience was very good about sitting and listening. They were not terribly loud in their laughter but many smiles and chuckles. I was the only comedian that night. Everyone else did music or poetry. We had one storyteller. The last talent finished at 7:40pm, and it was announced the evening was over. Simple enough.
Guys, I really liked this room. Yes, it is a ways outside the Sacramento area, but you can do as much as 15 minutes, and if there are no kids, feel free to say anything. The night I performed, thankfully, I could do some adult material. It went over well. In fact, I think my R rated stuff did the best in all the minutes I was on stage. Come having already eaten, unless you can wait for a late dinner. But if you’re going to do the room, stay and support. It is free to do (tip optional) and they do like comedy. The audience is there for the show, nothing else. You will have an attentive audience.
