  1. Parking at Jamison’s is on the street and it is free. The room has been going on a couple of years but only in the last couple of months has it been run by the newest host, a gentleman named Mike. The business is a full bar, and they have one pool table and two dart boards. Beers run $6 a pint. Three TVs are located in or near the bar.
Fortunately, open mic takes place in a room separate from the bar, so there are not many distractions. I did notice if you sit in the rear of the room, you can hear the music from the bar. The room seats about 34. They have a stage, and on it are two mics and behind that a drum set. The lighting is low, but visible enough that you can see the talent. I do recommend not wearing a hat. The room is open to all genres of talent but mostly draws comics. Comics get five minutes, musicians ten minutes. There are no language restrictions. You get the light a minute before your time is up.
The signup sheet came out 8pm. It’s first come first choice. I took the second spot. The one other comic in the room took the fifth spot. He was there before I arrived. By 8:50pm we had nine signups. Of those, only one was a musician. I learned Mike likes to put two comics up then have a musician then repeat for the rest of the evening.
We had 17 people in the room when we started at 9:03pm. I ended up going up second. I had a great time. The audience was very receptive to my humor, and I even got an applause break. After the third talent, Mike offers a comped drink to anyone who can best draw on a napkin a topic that the host gives: tonight’s topic, Dick Fiesta. I saw people scribbling on napkins, and in a couple of minutes, Mike gathered the napkins and awarded a drink. The fifth performer was a spoken word artist. A second comped drink was again offered after the sixth talent. The theme of the second drawing: Muff Party.
Guys, this is a good room to do. Mike does what he can to keep the people there to support even after going up. Offering a comped drink periodically is a noteworthy example. But I think this room would keep people there, anyway. A brisk five minute set, one after the other, with intermittent music, keeps the room moving along. Before you know it, it’s over before you’re ready to leave. Also, this can be the second room in a double-header, as another room begins hours earlier only a couple few blocks away.
