  1. This was a very fun room to do. It’s a small community, where everything happening is within walking distance once you’ve street parked downtown. But be mindful of your time. Meter maid on the prowl.
While open mic at Juice & Java has no stage, from where the mic is positioned, even though there are more places to sit, about 42 people can see the stage well. Two mics are set up close to where the entrance is. I was concerned about that, people coming up and out while talent performs. But as it turned out, they block the front entrance when the show begins and people come and go through a side door, much less obtrusive.
They were very specific in their restrictions: don’t say f**k. And that rule only applies when children are present. There are 12 available slot on the signup sheet with an additional five for possible consideration. The place serves coffee, tea, shakes as well as beer and a variety of sweets and snack foods.
The signup sheet came out 5:30. It’s first come first choice. A gentleman named Tommy runs the room. He’s been the host since July of 2016. He grew up on open mics in the area. Mostly Tommy performs each week, playing music. All genres of talent are welcome, but mostly they get music.
I took the third spot. There were 18 in the audience by 6:45pm. One performer recognized me from another venue I had done in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, I didn’t remember him.
Guys, this was a pleasant room. Tommy kept the audience focused on the show, and it wasn’t difficult, what with many of the talent being repeat performers. Once talent did Broadway tunes, even wore the mask when singing Phantom of the Opera. The room had such variety, even though it was mostly music. And my doing standup third only added to the variety, the audience receiving me very well.
I stayed to the end, enjoying some incredible local talent, and sipping on a beer or two. I felt good about my set, and think I’ll be back. I enjoyed a late lunch at another business before coming to Juice & Java, and it was delicious. The people are friendly and it’s a peaceful area. A pleasant distraction from big city life and traffic.
