  1. Open mic at Angelo’s Drive-In takes place outside. As such, open mic here is seasonal, happening every other Wednesday from June through September only. There are no lights set up, relying exclusively on nature to provide a spotlight on talent.
Chris Cruz runs the open mic, has been doing so for two years. He sets up three cones in the parking lot, blocking enough space to set up two mics and a sound system for performers to play to the audience sitting outside, which seats about 59. Signup started 6:30, and it’s first-come-first-choice. There are 15 slots and the venue runs from 7pm to 10pm. Talent gets 3 songs or 10 minutes. The place is family-friendly, so comedians, watch your language.
I took the first slot and by the time the show started, my friend and I were the only two to have signed up. There were 18 peeps in attendance. Chris opened with about 25 minutes of music. By 7:10, 22 people sat in the audience. Surprisingly, street noise did not deter from the show, even when it was just me talking into the mic. Anyone who wanted to enjoy the show, did. My friend went up after me, and in that time more talent had arrived. We had a second venue to go to, so we only stayed a short time after my friend wrapped up.
I hope this place gets more attention next summer and every summer thereafter. Don’t be turned-off that it takes place outside in a parking lot. It’s set up much better than you can imagine. Angelo’s has atmosphere. The waitresses wear roller skates reminiscent of the 50s. The audience is here to have fun. Comedy in addition to music, are the right ingredients for a good time. Add to the good time your standup.
