  1. Open mic at Metro Kitchen takes place outside during the summer months. There is plenty of free street parking. A young man names Zoey runs the venue, has been doing so for almost a year.* The “room” is family-friendly, especially because it takes place outside and people passing by don’t want to hear offensive language. I get that. So, keep it clean.
I learned while there that you can phone in earlier in the day and reserve a spot. When I showed up at 6:30pm promptly, I was still the only open micer that night so far. I took the 4th spot. I was told they used to have a lot more comedians each week till language became a problem.
The evening started at 7:54pm. There were 13 people in attendance. The place serves alcohol and healthy foods: salads, sandwiches, soup and chili. If you don’t want healthy foods, opposite Metro Kitchen is an eatery that specializes in fish. Outside there are 4 tables with benches. Zoey opened with three songs then talent went up. I was third, even though I took the 4th spot when signing up. Attendance had increased by 2 by the time I went up. Talent gets 10 minutes.
Despite being told of the drop off of comedians, the night I went up, most of the talent were there to be funny. There was one poet. Everyone else, a musician. I stayed for most of the evening. Attendance dropped little by little.
Except for the diminishing numbers, this is a supportive room. Even though the outside can offer many distractions, mostly attention went to talent while they performed. Zoey does a good job of setting up mics and a nice sound system and two mics. He’s full of energy, and tries to keep the energy high. There can be down time as musicians ready themselves and their instruments, but so what? Go to this mic, even when they move it indoors. Attendance will probably be higher, as you will be also performing for those eating inside at the fish place. Trust me, when you see it you’ll know what I mean.
*I performed this venue in late August. Zoey has since stopped running the room, but someone else is.
