Fun, supportive room. It's in the Vienna Cafe which has amazing bread. The room that they do that comedy in is well laid our for it and has a good sound system. A lot of the comics stay for a good portion of the show. Oh, and they pay attention. For the first half of the show we had 3 real audience members too. Good place try new material.
This will start off as the most packed open mic during the week at Sal's. It's later than the others and has drop-ins who do full sets. Definitely a marathon worth checking out. As people get word of the new nights, be sure to support those, too! If there's less people, you will definitely get more than 5 minutes and sometimes the line-up will loop around so ya get extra time to hash out ideas that might come to you during the course of the mic! Amy Hawthorne and Jimmy Talarico are the regular hosts, with many guest hosts. Be sure to get there well before 8, since the list for Tuesdays fills up quickly!
I love this place. The service is great and the Chai Tea is delicious. I'm really impressed with the show because it flows nicely and you see quite a few really talented comics dropping in here. Even if you go at the end there are still a few people there to watch your set as well. I like the camaraderie that the hosts (Jimmy Talarico and Amy Hawthorne are the 2 I've seen) create. It's a lot of fun and I'm excited to see how the renovations turn out.
actually on the contrary to January 12's remark, my first stand-up there was surprisingly good even though I went at something like 25th...I don't like the fact that a lot of comics hang out outside for the most part after they're done for the most part, but they can still here the microphone...lol
I disagree that the room is well laid out as it's basically split in half! That however is changing with a MAJOR remodel where the club will take on a more comedy club type layout so patience my young ones! Sal and his staff though are GREAT and it's a much more supportive atmosphere than say The Store on Sunday or Monday which has turned into a real Hyenas Nest. Amy and Jimmy are great hosts and although the comics outside smoking and kibitzing can be distracting I'd rather them talk and smoke outside than in the back of the room.
The waitress there who I think is French is also super nice and doesn't pressure you into a purchase unlike say The Ha Ha. If Jack were only 10% as cool as Sal the Ha Ha would be tolerable.
Love this place, but the bus that takes me home stops running at 10pm (not the Metro). Sal is supportive and friendly. I walked in the wrong direction for 30 minutes and he still let me on at 14. Also, Amy is super nice. Love this room.
I loved performing here. It smells like fresh bread, and the staff is very nice. I got there crazy early, but didn't realize most people emailed before they came. By the time I saw the list, there were already 35 people on it. Even so, half of the people didn't show up, so I got to take one of their spots.
I loved the stage, it is just the right size. The host and the comics were very supportive.
This is a really friendly room with a nice vibe. I would recommend emailing on the day though - I'm an out of towner and had never done stand up in LA before. Here on my own, I felt quite comfortable and well-supported. A few comics carried on a bit too long past the time limit when they weren't that funny but not very much you can do about that. The host was very nice and unlike some hosts didn't go on and on with her own stuff. The food was nice, the service excellent. A working room to hone your skills. Give it a try!
You need to email salscomedy@gmail.com to get on the list. Update the link please! I went last night and that is what the host told me after I had emailed the wrong link. But he was nice enough to let this out of towner go up before I had to leave. Good room. Comics willing to laugh at each other are the best! Thanks LA.
I agree with the previous posts. I was there on Tue and it was a fun room. Just the right mix of attention and distraction. The audience was alive, the host was pretty good. He was good at pick-up and kept a busy room moving along. Too many times the host thinks the comics are interrupting their show. This guy made it feel less open-mic-ey
Don't bother e-mailing- they don't respond. You can call, but they're just going to tell you to come sign up. The hosts are nice, and generally everyone gets to go up. I did my first stand-up here, and it was a great place to start. That said, you outgrow it quickly. I've been a few times, and it's the same comics doing the EXACT SAME BITS over and over again. Like a lot of open mics, it's hard to gauge your material, as the room is full of comics waiting to go up, ignoring you. If something does work here, it's a good indication that it's strong material. But, god, people- try to put at least ONE new joke into your set.
^ yeah, $3 is less than almost all of the clubs that charge to perform, but I won't endorse a place that charges people to perform
Aside from the fee, this place is like almost any other L.A. open mic in that if you get even a few laughs from a few people then you're officially crushing.
Fun, cool, supportive. $5 cover but you're paying to keep the lights on.

ReplyDeleteThis was a great supportive room with pretty solid sets. Felt like the place a comic goes after a real set to play around and chill out.
