Great room. Comics sitting in the front are paying attention, and you can sit in the back and work out your set without feeling like you are ignoring the show.
A lot of students from Bobbie Oliver working out their stuff. They are warm and receptive to everyone on the stage. It's a great environment to work on your material...and the coffee is great too!
This is actually every tues not just the 1st and 3rd tues. It's run by Scott Everett Berger. It's in Altadena, the same distance to the Icehouse (just go north instead of south on Lake st. exit) It's in the Coffee Gallery coffee shop but it's through the shop in the back to the left where an entire show room opens up. It looks almost like a duplicate of the Icehouse annex (same artist even painted the backdrop). Great mini thrust stage, tables and chairs, great lighting and sound system. Apparently the Icehouse booker used to book musical acts here up till very recently. Some great comedy shows could definitely be produced here. The open mic is run by lottery. You sign a slip of paper into a cup. As Scott calls the names you put your name where ever you want on the list. Depending on how many comics there are depends on the time. Usually it's 5 min a piece. It was an 8 min night when I did it. Only one person bumping, for a comic who had another show to run to. Everyone was extremely supportive. Very refreshing from Brewco tues night thrashings. All but two comics stayed for the entire show. I was told even real audience wander in sometimes. Only catch is it's the same comics every week so bring new material. Other than that parking is great and so is the food. No pay to play but he does have a donation cup out and asks for whatever you can spare to pay for electricity and what not. I'm making this a bi-weekly event for me between this and Hallenbecks. - Brett Gilbert
Crowd was small, but supportive. Nice, big stage. I like that when they draw your name, you can pick which order you'd like to perform in. That way if you have to leave early, you can perform earlier (provided that they draw your name in time before the spots are filled). Be prepared: If you bomb, you BOMB. Dead silence, no pity laughs. Some people even groaned. It was a bit tough to sit through that and watch the comic have to take it, but it's part of the stand-up world. Pity laughs are horrid anyway :)
All in all, a real cool place to do your act and try out new stuff. Bring your energy!
This mic used to be up on the front stage. It was a good mic, but in my opinion overly supportive. A lot of recreational stand ups would come to this mic. It has since moved into the backstage which looks like a duplicate of the old Ice House Annex. Since moving back there the mic is still respectful, but it has become a more of a real room. Which is great! Everyone is supportive, but there isn't a lot of fake pity laughing. Everyone pays attention, but you have to work way harder than you had to when the mic was being held in the front. I don't know why that is, but I like it! The host is a bit long winded, but that's really the only snag. Other than that this is a great mic!
Great supportive room. Fun and laid back. Definitely a good place to work on material. Will go back. Thank you for giving me a space to work and grow as an artist.
Friendly and supportive. Mostly comics. Sign up with MC by 7:55pm, then they pull names for line-up and start the show. Free, you get 5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most friendly open mic I've been to so far.
ReplyDeleteVery supportive place. I highly recommend it!
ReplyDeleteAn eclectic mix of audience and performers. Supportive. Friendly. 5 minutes, ditto...
ReplyDeleteReally supportive audience. Mostly comics but everyone was friendly. None of that gross competitive energy. So glad I went!

ReplyDeleteEveryone was very friendly and welcoming.
My regular hang out and workout room. Come join us!

ReplyDeleteEverything everyone has said here about the Coffee Gallery is true. All the comics/ audience members were very sweet, supportive, and eager to laugh.

ReplyDeleteIt's a solid open mic, better than most. Scott, the MC is chill and has a good sense of humor. Recommend it.
