  1. Going on for four months, open mic at Beach House is for standup only. It follows karaoke night, which goes from 8 to 11pm. The room is run by Lex Las Vegas, the second room I know him to run. Thank him for taking the time to run two mics if you meet him. Talent gets five to seven minutes, and there are no language restrictions. The signup sheet was already out when I arrived at 10:15pm, and it’s first come first choice. I got the second and fourth spot for myself and my friend.
The stage is sizeable, a foot off the ground. The backdrop is the business’s logo on the screen that had been used for karaoke where the lyrics appear. I counted 14 TVs on but muted, and they stayed on during the mic, which was a bit of a distraction. I think the immediate TVs close to behind the stage should be off. The room seats about 73 who can see the performers. On stage is a cordless mic and no stand or stool. I saw one pool table, and if put to use while talent is performing, it could be a distraction. Sure enough, the table was in use when my friend went up second.
The business is a full bar, and beers run only $7. They offered comfort food like wings and fries, but also decent entrees like garlic chicken, coconut shrimp, and hamburger steak.
Even though I signed up fourth, I ended up going up fifth. Someone who arrived late took precedence. I gotta say, the light shining on the stage is not the best. It’s set up on a seat to illuminate upwards. As such, depending on how you hold the mic, you may find yourself in shadow. I recommend holding the mic in your left hand.
I counted 21 in the room at 11:40pm. My friend had flown in from Florida, so she was on a three-hour lag. For her, it was almost 3am. I had warned the host before the mic started that we would need to leave after my set, and he was accommodating. I also apologized to some of the comedians for not staying to support when they saw my act.
Guys, first off, the mic takes place very late. Don’t expect a huge crowd on a work/school night. But talent gets five to seven minutes, and this room can be the second one on a Wednesday night, if you’re up for double-dipping after Wiseguys. Lex had as much vigor hosting as he did the night before at his earlier-in-the-evening mic. It’s worth doing this room.
    Especially if you’re hungry.
