  1. Open mic at Monsignor is for standup only and is run by a gentleman named Will. The mic has been going on a year and a half. Parking is on the street. Signup is first come first choice, and the room is on the honor system. The host emphasized when the sheet came out to allow those you know arrived before you to sign up first. There are no language restrictions, and talent gets four minutes, the light at three.
The mic takes place in a separate from the bar, so there are no distractions. Know, though, that despite windows being open, wow, the room was hot. When we arrived at about quarter to 8pm, the room was packed with comedians, bringing the temperature of the room up, and commingling with the humidity, it was not pleasant. Thank goodness the business is a bar, so I got an $8 cold beer which helped. When the signup sheet came out at 7:59pm and everyone signed up, knowing where they are in the lineup, quite a few talent left the room, and with the room less crowded, it became less hot.
The room seats about 30. A mic and stand are set up to one side of the room, and everyone there can see the performer just fine, even without a stage. While food is not served, Monsignor offers free popcorn, which was nice. Of the 37 slots on the signup sheet, my friend got the 29th spot. The host informed the room at the beginning that the talent who got the most laughs (the funniest) wins an $8 small bottle of champagne.
The mic began at 8:17pm, and I saw 22 people in the room. We stayed to support the first few talent before leaving to get some dinner. Unfortunately, we did not get to eat beforehand, so we missed quite a bit of the show. Upon returning, my friend learned she was to go up after two more comedians. What timing. She did her four minutes, and we stayed till the end. After the last signup went up, the host asked if there was anyone who did not sign up that wanted to go up and three more comedians agreed to do a four-minute set. At 10:13pm, there were ten people in the room, and the evening ended at 10:55pm. The winner of that night’s mic was announced and pics of her and the host handing her the champagne were taken, and the host thanked everyone for another wonderful night at Monsignor.
Guys, this is a good room to do. I get that because it was so crowded, some people wanted to step out from the heat and humidity and come back when they neared their turn. I also get that people left to have dinner like my friend and I did, had you not eaten before the mic. Between the support of the room and no distractions, the focus is on the talent and the mic. That is best. And that you might very well win a prize for being the funniest is only the cherry atop of the ice cream. I can see why this room attracts a lot of locals.
