Called Three Dead Moose Open Mic, this room has been going on an impressive 14 years and is run by a gentleman named Joe. Signup is first come first choice, and there are no language restrictions. The room is for standup only, and parking is on the street. Talent gets four minutes, the light at three. I arrived at 7:25pm, believing the signup sheet came out at 7:30, since the room starts at 8pm. I was wrong. The sheet comes out at 7pm, and there were already 28 signups on a sheet that has up to 40 slots. The business is a full bar, and they also offer comfort food. I had a burger and fries, and they bring the food to you, as the mic takes place in a room separate from the bar area. In that room are four muted TVs, and the room seats about 40. The stage is a platform stage in one corner with a cordless mic and stand on it. The room started at 7:37pm. The TVs are turned off before the mic begins. Since the mic takes place in its own room, anyone in attendance is there for the mic, and there are no distractions. Talent gets 20 percent off their bill if they order more than one drink. I counted 20 people in the room when we began. Since The sheet was as full as it was, I decided not to go up. I arrived that day, flying from Los Angeles, and I was a bit wiped out. I had a beer with my burger, and enjoyed the evening as long as I was there. Talent respected the light, and the support was strong. People paid attention. I saw no one whispering to one another, not watching the stage. Guys, this is a good room to do. It can be a second mic after an earlier mic that is very close by, you can walk to it. That the mic takes place in its own room is a plus. The focus is on the comedy and nothing more. I am told most rooms in Chicago give four minutes, which isn’t bad. In my travels, I’ve done a lot of rooms that only offer three minutes of stage time. That Joe has been running this room for so long is a testament to how good this room is. If you are visiting Chicago on a Sunday, this room is a good one to do.
