Open mic at All In Saloon has been going on only four months, as of this post, and is run by a gentleman named Aaron. Parking is on the street, and it is free. All genres of talent are welcome. There are no language restrictions. Signup begins 7pm, and talent can do 15 minutes of stage time, even go up again a second time once all signups get their first turn. The business is a full bar, but they also offer comfort food like burgers, sandwiches, salads and appetizers. Order before 9pm, as the kitchen limits their menu after that. I wanted to order a club sandwich and was told I could not get that, so I settled for their wings. Beers run $7 a pint. There is no stage. Two mics are set up just to the left of the entrance. The backdrop is a window that shows street traffic. When my friend and I showed up at 7pm, there was already one other talent ahead of us. The signup sheet came out and we took the second and third spot. The host showed up just after 8pm and set up the equipment. There are about 36 seats that allow you to see the performance area well, and it is lit such that you can see the talent just fine. The room houses one pool table and three TVs, two of which were on but muted. The mic can go to as late as 11pm, even longer. The mic started at 8:29pm, and I counted 15 people in the room, including the host and bartender. When I told the bartender we were there to do standup, she got very excited, as did one other person who was not there to perform. I don’t think they get much comedy at All In Saloon. The host played a couple of songs then asked if I would go up first. Evidently, the first signup needed extra time to prepare, so I agreed to be the first talent to perform. I did 15 minutes of standup to a very thankful audience. People at the bar watching TV turned their chairs to see me, and I got some good laughs. My friend did just as well but did not do as much stage time. After us, two additional talents did four songs each. During that time, one audience member approached us and offered to buy us a drink, they liked our comedy so much. Guys, this is a good room to do. Yes, Longview is out of the way for Tacoma-based comedians, but if you are willing to make the drive, 15 minutes of stage time is grand. The room is deeply appreciative of standup, as they mostly only ever get musicians. You are not playing to a roomful of fellow comedians waiting their turn. When you’re on stage the room is respectful and watches. The bartender when we were ready to leave said how much she loved our comedy, and a couple of other people said something similar to us before we left. If you are visiting Washington state, passing through this area, do this room. If you’re a comedian living here, again, the drive can be long, but it’s good to perform to a room that knows nothing about you, so you can truly gauge how good your material is. As such, it may be good to make the drive, go with a comedian-friend or two, and rock this room with a half hour of comedy or more. Even Portland-based comedians can drive an hour north and do this room.
