  2. Sacramento Comedy Spot may have booked shows on other nights of the week, but on Sundays and Mondays, this is a very good open mic to do at a comedy room. The place seats about 70 with rows of chairs from two sides. The stage is a nice, spacious one with two entrances. I learned they teach improve in this room. Talent gets 5 minutes on stage, a red light in the back at 1 minute. There are no language restrictions. A DJ plays talent on and off with music. Open mic at SCS has been going on about 3 years. The gentleman who runs the room is Kumar. Parking is on the street for free.
I was a little discouraged, waiting outside before the venue admitted people. Talent waiting told me this room asks you to bring people to get stage time. I later learned direct from the horse’s mouth that that is not entirely true. I let them know I was visiting from Los Angeles and that I have no one to bring other than myself. I still got stage time. There is a $5 admission fee. Inside they sell beer and wine.
The lineup is determined after everyone puts their name on a list and there is a random draw. Thankfully, I got the 5th spot. There were 11 people in the audience when we started at 8pm. That number increased to 24 by the time I finished my set at 8:30. Numbers diminished thereafter: 15 peeps by 9:20pm; 9 peeps by 9:40pm. We finished at 10pm.
I stayed till the end. One person was making their debut to standup ever, and I told him I would support. Unfortunately, he drew almost the last spot of the night and the audience had thinned greatly. Even though most of the people there were comedians, at least some people were there to support their friends performing. Unfortunately, talent and friends left as the evening progressed. It’s a good room. Kumar keeps the energy high, runs it like a booked show, but the energy inevitably lessens with the body count. It’s a great room when the audience was full. My set went well, mostly because of the size of the room, I believe. But even if you draw a late placement, a third of the room remained to support.
Sacramento offers a lot of open mics. And there’s several to go to on a Sunday night. And you may very well be committing your entire evening to just this one if you choose to do it, but do it anyway. I felt appreciated and welcomed, even if I was visiting from out of town and brought no one. Sure, they made $5 off of me, and a few more after I bought two beers as a Thank You for giving me stage time, but so what? It was a place to go for comedy. The audience is there for comedy. And your experience will feel like you did a professional room.
And with enough practice, you will.
