Light crowd, which is to be expected; being that there was a new host. New host is HOT by the way. Also if said new host deems it appropriate to "short" a comedian's set -for whatever reason- she should apply the same policy on herself. She went a little long between comedians. Overall this mic has potential and it's free!
Sidebar: The clean-comedy(no cursing) policy sucks my big-fat-mother-fuckin'-pulsating-cock.
was at the first edition of this show and i thought it was great. the host put a lot into it, making it feel like an actual show, and spending her own money doing so.
most of the comics were pretty good, and they all stayed until the end.
she has a thing where the audience members get a chance to tell a joke, and the best one wins $10, which was kinda cool.
The clean set rule worried me, because that is unheard of in NY, but every comic abode and did fine, and it's a good technique to have down so that if someone offers you a show where you have to be clean, you'll have at least some experience.
Totally supportive room. Yvonne (hostess) is super nice, funny, etc. The clean aspect of show is interesting, good to practice that muscle, but its not like you get thrown out for swearing. Overall, totally great room very different vibe from most of the stone faced comics leaving after their set all around the city.
About time there's a cleaner mic. Now the comics will have to use actual material instead of degrading women and cursing for shock value. I'll check it out.
This was one of the best open mics I have attended. Yvonne is very funny, original, creative and great at organizing the time allotted. She was very fair, sensitive and accommodating of different schedules. Considering there is a market for clean comedians, this offers comedians an environment to work on clean funny material.
No cursing = no black people...lmao joking! i curse way to much in my stand up so the no cursing would sounds like a good way for me to learn how to perform for a conservative crowd. Conservative = white people hahah...I Look foward to checking out the hot host, i mean the open mic!
Hey Comedy Lovers!!! Hope you are enjoying the holiday season!! Hopefully you'll have some stored up jokes and funny stories to share when MiMi comes back in effect on Jan 6, 2011. (They could win you a cash prize!!)
There's no show tonight, but looking forward to letting the good times roll Next Thursday, Jan 6th @ 6:30!
Had my first open mic here. Cost was on donation basis only, no cover or drink minimum. Yvonne was very energetic and nice, and I like the idea of people having to keep it clean. Would definitely come again!
Outstanding mic, incredibly fun host that kept the energy much higher than the average open mic. Communal feel. Venue is a bit noisy, but still much more enjoyable than most mics I've been to. I'll be returning for sure!
so for the next 2 months we'll re name this mama I failed! I guess she couldn't trust someone to maintain, oh! the fear of coming back to a packed room of freedom, but no.. warden orgi has a reputation to uphold.
I now have a whole routine about being the only one there last evening. There was a Con Ed utility workers union meeting downstairs. The place was jammed. I'm gonna vote for Paul Grassi for the next president of Union Local 1-2. He had the best (also, only) literature. Missed you, Yvonne. Hope you are well. Willing to wait. You run a fabulous room.
Just performed last night, and I had a great time. Yvonne is HILARIOUS, and (perhaps more importantly), really helpful. She gave me great feedback on my set, and as a new comedian just getting started, I really appreciated it. I'll definitely be returning soon.
know what's great? when the host emails you ten minutes after check-in time to let you know the show's canceled due to a private event. fucking unacceptable, to talk up your mic like it's a johnny carson audition and then have no idea what's happening in your own venue. I'd understand if I just showed up out of nowhere but I booked a spot, got a confirmation email, the guise of professionalism and then this. Balls.
I hit this up last Thursday. 10 comics came in from the rain. Chay hosted well. It's upstairs from the bar and the only audience is fellow comedians. So any crowd work comes off a bit incestuous. At one point the bartender cranked Adele too loudly. It was my first open mic. Any non-comic audience would improve this. Also, your title on badslava says "Momma,Made it!" (sic).
Chay is a great host, one of my favorites. He encourages people to keep the energy up, and if the mic is full but there are a bunch of walk-ins, he doesn't even do a set to open; he gives his time up so that the walk-ins can go at the end. The mic is also FREE, with a 0-drink minimum. The "no cursing" thing is a blessing in disguise, 'cause everybody tells me you can't get booked if you curse out your ass at an audition anyway. It's also only an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, tops, so if you're a selfish narcissist (like me) you can still probably find it in yourself to stay 'til the end.
The only downside to this mic is that there isn't much of an audience; it's mostly, if not solely, made up of the fellow comics. But hey, they all stick around, and as I mentioned... FREE. Free things are good, especially when they don't suck. And this mic definitely doesn't. Check it out.

ReplyDeleteThe host is apparently in LA until Sept; at least according to the bartender...I guess I should have tried to contact somebody before I went (7/29).
