  1. DO NOT go to this mic. I got there at 8:30, only people there was a bartender and another comic who was told that this was a booked show only, that it's not an open mic. I left, came back at 9:00, no one was there, and the bartender said that the guy running the show called and cancelled the show right before the show was scheduled to start. I don't know if this show is an open mic, booked; doesn't matter, the guy running it never showed up. This listing should be taken off the open mic page. Complete waste of time.

  2. Ok...BASED on your post DATE: LETS clear this up mr anonymous....

    1. The post said CONTACT me for PERFORMING, every comic that did confirm with me I E-MAILED them back telling them that the OWNER canceled the show DUE TO SNOW. So first this is not a drop by open mic which is your very very first mistake....BELOW IS THE LISTING AGAIN: LOOK @ the Detail of Contact Nick Z to Sign Up..If you paid attention maybe you would have received the very same EMAIL everyone did... So thank you for the unnecessary NEGATIVE feedback..

  3. FYI, the show was cancelled due to serious weather conditions by the owner of the venue. In some areas where the comics were coming from was declared a state of emergency due to the conditions of the roads. Without knowing all of the information, it completely shows your lack of intelligence and professionalism. I actually am a comic as well, and received my conformation email for March 1st, showed up and had a great time. You have to sign up in order to get on the roster of the evening. Had you signed up you would have known many hours earlier that it was cancelled. You were going to show up like the idiot at the party that wasn't invited in the first place. Bottom line, you posting this review, without knowing all the details, shows your complete lack of information, detail orientation and professionalism. Had you been professional and inquired as to what happened, we would have alerted you as to what the situation. You can be now sure to never receive a spot on this show and if you will be asked to leave. This room will continue to grow and grow and it will be one less room that you can perform at that you lost due to opening your mouth, lacking information and uninformed negativity.

  4. This is a really solid booked open mic. They let you go on for up to 15 minutes, only book 5-8 comics per show and there tends to be some real audience members.

Also, the "prank phone calls" at the end of the night is highly entertaining. I'd recommend stopping by at 10pm just to listen in to the prank calls. You can also give Nick some numbers to call that you want to mess with.

  5. I want to see if I can cram the word "professional" in my message as much as the fella above me. Regardless of any personal distaste because the mic was cancelled (that happens), this room is a place to perform. There were a few audience members, and the rest were comedians. Nick seems pretty passionate about promoting it to make it better, so I think we should let this thing live for a little bit before trying to tear it down because someone got their delicate feelings hurt. Go through the necessary process, because this is a FREE mic and that kind of resource should be heralded, not condemned.

  6. laid back room, great host. Do bring material to work on because though the room provides lots to comment on you can bet that the comics before and after you will do so too, and the audience will have heard it before. Make sure you know where you are going in the line up - this mic is super flexible, so comics ahead of you may be doing longer sets than you anticipate. Women get out to this mic, the sausages will appreciate you.

  7. First time at this room on Monday and it was freakin awsome. Everyone was cool as hell and the comics showed sobmuch love to one another. You had a nice size audience as well so it was an all around great spot. Nick was cool and they give you a lot of time to work you're set. Great room to try material out and get excellent feedback. Make sure you email beforehand to reserve a spot. Can't wait to work with these guys again.

  8. I came from Cincinnati to New York, so I emailed Nick to ask him about doing the show. I got on with no problem. everyone I talked to was really nice. Here in Cincinnati there aren't a lot of places for amateur comedians to perform, but still yet most places you have to ask to get on the show. Open mic doesn't necessarily mean just show up and get on. There was a good size audience. I've done shows with only a few people in the audience, so it didn't matter to me how many people were there, but it was well enough. All in all it's a good show.

  9. I had a similar experience to the first poster. I went, and just myself and another comic there. The bar owner said he had not heard that the mic was cancelled, so I bought a drink and sat around for a while.

I came back to my house & saw I had received an e-mail from 4 hours prior to the open mic cancelling it. Not sure why -- certainly fine weather, etc.

I would say if you want to go to this open mic, carefully check your e-mail prior to going as it seems to cancel unexpectedly. It would be cool if the organizer could send a text message too for those (last dying few) of us who aren't hooked into the mobile internet.

  10. i was there on the 24th and had a good time. free mic with a nice chunk of time to perform and there were some actual audience members. even if it can get cancelled once or twice every few months, when it does happen its a good place to perform.

  11. Checked it out last monday. Good room, potential to be even better. Three dollar Yeungling, and a solid seven minutes to do your thing. They say they plan on going to every monday, so check it out. Worth the haul.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I believe its every 1st and 3rd monday now. Alright mic considering its free.

  13. Awesome mic!!! Whether it be for comedians or audience members it's a great vibe and atmosphere. Nick is an awesome producer and comic and one of the nicest and funniest people I've ever met in the business. Its free , but it's better than all those $5 mics. Also you can do 10 minutes. 8-10 depending if you signed up early or not. So I'd def check It out def my favorite mic by far.

  14. This my favorite Mic in NYC. No MC fee..aka $5.00-$10.00 for stagetime! Very good Host and Co-Host. ..You get 8 to 10 mins to workout. There is an audience that pays attention to your material. As a professional comedian paid to perform with taxes taking out..lol..this room is definetly worth doing consistantly to polish you "Comedic Diamond"...worth the haul! Everytime I'm in the Z Room it's some famous Comedian or Actor on the scene..good place to network!

  15. This was my 3rd visit to the Room, and my second time performing. Had a great time as always. Had a great Tim talking to Nick and to Darra sho I've known for years and convinced me to go onstage. Good crowd, good feedback, great hosts.

  16. fantastic spot! went there earlier tonight. the vibe was great and open mic was really fun . oh and the dude who runs the whole thing does the illest girl voice for prank calls . drinks are reasonably priced and what more can i say!? good times ! haha

  17. I LOVE THIS MIC!!! AS THE MONTHS GO BY IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT AND KEEP ON COMING DOWN!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. This mic was great last night. A lot of heads from around the NY comedy scene, a couple of girls from Flava of Love and in general a good time. Free mics+cheap drinks+comics from around the scene in NY=a great place to test your stuff out. Relatively supportive mic crowd, as they go.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I performed on this show 10/25/10 and I had a great time! The crowd was great and very supportive. I don't care how many ppl are in the room, I'm gonna rock the mic! Thanks Darra & Nick for giving us a place to perform!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Supportive environment. I was able to get rowdy. Some crowd and supportive comics. Host is a sweetheart and Nick is a nice guy. Come down and work it out!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Best thing about this mic was the hostess. She did a great job at keeping the show moving (not doing a ton of jokes in between comics) and keeping the energy up and the room FUN. She was great and I'll be back.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I did this mic last Monday and had a great time. The audience wasn't just comics, the host was very welcoming and the atmosphere was chill and fun. The one minute round after was fun too. A worthwhile free mic with cheap beers and good people.

  23. Great Mic..real comedic atomosphere..great audiance..cheap drinks!
Nick Z is a great talent. The Prank calls are great..Nick Z should be on the radio with the great voice he uses for the pranks! 7 mins to work out stop through ASAP!

  24. Came back last night and I really enjoy this mic but can you go back to the 12 spots so that we can actually work out material? The running around for 2-3 minutes is starting to get on my nerves. I'm glad the word is getting out and the turnout is great but there has to be some kinda method to the madness.

  25. I could say this room is crappy with a bunch of wannabees! but then I would be lying. I'm gonna say wow! this is a highly seasoned mic, you better bring the kitchen sink with you here. all of these guys are very good. they bring it! the host with the prank calls un-rehearsed.. phenominal! this room is 5-star. I'm always looking for the real not sympathy, or deliberate hate. None of that same delivery comic flow here either. ordained by lay-v. oh yeah co-host celeb too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The co-host, while a pleasant enough person, is not a 'celeb' as the previous poster said. She was on Flavor of Love, and not a very big part of the show either. If that makes you a 'celebrity,' then I am going to swallow my tongue. This mic ranges from decent to deathly depressing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is a nice little bar and the host (Darra) was exceptionally kind to everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  28. A free mic in midtown that starts at 9:00 is not to be looked upon with anything but delight.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I had a great time at this mic. Good energy from all the comics. Real audience members that left smiling. Drinks were two for one. Darra, Ben and Nick run a great room.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I had a great time at the z room the other night, there was some really great comics and the host darra was hilarious!!! nick z even stopped by and stepped up with some great energy and jokes. Great mix of live audience and comics. A+ mic in my book!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's an honest room, if your funny you'll hear laughter and if your not you won't. It's a nice, respectful room. Ben and Nick are very nice and warm and Darra makes you feel like your a guest in her home.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm not a comedian, but I came to see some live comedy and it was a great time! The people were all friendly and the drinks were cheap. All the comics were hilarious. Nick Z had everyone going with his jokes and of course his prank calls! Darra, the host, was funny and polite as well. I definitely will return in the future!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Darra and Ben were gracious hosts and kind enough to put me up. As a fellow producer of mics and shows, I am very sensitive to how rooms are run, and they do a great job. There was great energy and a great crowd, the place was packed. Recommended!

    ReplyDelete
  34. it's not clicky, but there's alot of sideline ass kissing going on here. it's not professionally ran, the word is out on this place, there is definite favoritism you wont know when your going up! i hate mics where hosts dont smell themselves. try a lottery then maybe you'lll be like the woodshed the most successful mic in new york 2 years + and still going. come on saturday and get a clue. otherwise I'll come to the funeral!

    ReplyDelete
  35. To the last comment.. I could not agree more! the fat chick in the wig seemed pretty nice, I didn't really care for the male shirley temple passing himself of as some sort of psycho, he did have me convinced he was a bunny rabbit or a daisy! if there was any ass kissing, it was clearly professional! although i did see occasional butt sucking! again it's a mic! do not feed into the illusion it's a show, the potential is not there for that! from behind the hobbit that works the bar seems a great catch! but on the turn around, it's clearly shown father time has marked territory on her face.

  36. Clearly two wanna-be comics that didn't go up or bombed. I have been doing this mic for nearly a year and it's growth is great along w a great group of performers. So take your bitterness back to your moms basement and don't quit your day job. Have fun auditioning for next douche bag standing sadly your career goes no further than hiding behind an anonymous tag on the Internet. And if your not a comic start watching things with an open mind. If you still are a comic your writing still sucks even on a review post figures you don't perform ever for $. So go home and suck your moms queef and hold it like a bong hit! Have some respect!

    ReplyDelete
  37. What are you talking about dave you havent grown! you tell hack jokes, and use hack wording, it's fine if you make it funny! don't be a hero man, your not funny yet! I've know you for sometime, let the hosts defend those accusations, focus on your material. If your looking for brownie points, you got my vote. We sympathetically laugh with you not at you, so don't go doing nothing crazy like jump off a curve, you'll only fall short like your material! tell jokes, abandon the long set-up and get to the funny! that one's free!

  39. Looking forward to this Monday night's Z Room Show. The host was great! Her Partner, Nick Z does amazing prank calls in a girl voice. Overall great room.. Couldnt agree more with tony.. FREE and cheap drinks. Love the 2 for 1 well drinks.. By the time I got up I think I may have been drunk!

  40. I went on 3/14/11, and this was a very encouraging open mike. Darra the host was energetic, genuine, and funny. When everyone who attends, doesn't just come to do their own thing, but also comes with the right attitude of being a part of the audience for their peers, its a great experience. - Hugh Buttersauce

  41. Wow! Love the hate!! But I wish it were all correct in the criticism. See, I NEVER claimed to be a "Celeb". FAT yes, almost every show I say that, but a "Celeb"??? Yeah, that just ain't me. Yep! I was on the Flavor of Love Season 2, 5 distinct episodes and STILL not forgotten. And Charm school, hosted by Mo'Nique, another 5 distinct episodes and SALT and The Big C and Law & Order and Yadda Yadda Yadda. People know my name from Moscow to Buenos Aries, But if I were a "Celeb" I doubt I would have time to run a FREE show for people who want to make their way in comedy. Good or bad I put them up. WHY? Because EVERY COMEDIAN has had a bad night or written and performed a bad joke.

The sideline ass kissing? Well, That would be ME, if saying "Thank you for coming..." and remembering a persons name when they come in the door 5 or 6 weeks in a row is considered ass kissing, then I'm so guilty that "personal etiquette" needs to be renamed "kissing ass".

WE appreciate EVERY COMEDIAN that takes the time to come out on a dead ass MONDAY NIGHT to do our mic. Anyone that is on our email list and actually reads it KNOWS that we try to accommodate every one we can.....Come in early, just ask and you can leave early, come in late, just let us know and we will save you a spot. Need to get to another show afterwards, let us know so we can put you on so you can make it. We are not trying to be NAZI professionals, we're trying to give starving artists a place to drink cheaply and try out their new material, or old material, or even get in the game. And after 1 year, I think we will be around 2 or 3 or 4......Clayton Fletcher has done our mic, Jeffery Gurian, AND Courtney "Goldie" Jackson another VH1 Flavor of love/Charm School alumnae.

But "Anonymous" remains that way because they’re probably on our list and has yet to ask to be removed because maybe, just maybe a pro scout/manager just might come by and see the performance. They've been to The Z Room before you know.....Nothing like being on 2 shows on Vh1 that over 20 million people saw across the globe..................

Kisses and see you Monday night!

  45. Wat up ive been doing this mic for the last 5-6 weeks and it is easily my favorite. Its real laid back and the 2 for 1 drink specials are right up my drunk ass alley. Darra and nick are great chill hosts and they definitely make for a good night. And oh yeah its FREE. No bringer shit or drink minimums its just for comics to try shit out have fun and laugh at other funny people. Fukin internet haters. I have never had a bad time at this mic and darra will bum u a smoke or two when your broke ass has no butts. What can be better

  48. This mic has everything a poor comic can ask for... 2 for 1 drinks, friendly fellow comics and did I mention that it is FREE?? I have gone to this mic 5 or 6 times and have NEVER had a bad experience.
All negative comments about Darra and the way she runs this mic are completely pointless because she is the sweetest host I have ever seen. She gives all her efforts to meet every single person that comes to the mic. Darra also encourages them to return even if they are not funny whereas I would just tell them to keep their day jobs at the Union Square Starbucks.
Open mics are intended to be for FUN and PRACTICE and the Z Room is just that. Whether it is your first or 101st time at a mic, you will not regret coming to this one. Read the directions, CONTACT Darra, and bring it!
Also buy me a drink once you arrive and laugh at my jokes.

  51. Great mic, all the compliments are accurate. Darra, Ben, and Nick run a great room. The comics have been supportive both times I've gone and Darra is very fair about putting you on early the next week if you get stuck going on at the end. Really fun mic, go to it. Also its free, which I think we all like.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love this mic! Ben and Darra are awesome. The first time I went to this mic I was dead last because I just walked in, didn't email ahead of time. At the end of the night, Darra thanked me profusely for being patient and promised me an earlier spot the next time I came. She kept her promise. They are very supportive as are all the comics. Check it out!

    ReplyDelete
  53. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TRY TO EMAIL US FOR A SPOT. THE SHOW IS GETTING FULLER AND FULLER AND WE CANNOT ALWAYS ACCOMMODATE WALK-INS. THANKS

  54. Went to this mic last night and had a really great time. It's a really high-energy mic, which is great for testing out new stuff. I went 3rd to last, which I'm not gonna lie, kinda sucked (almost everyone had left by then). BUT, Darra was super nice and promised I'd go in the first half next time. Based on other people's comments, it seems like I can trust her to keep her word.

Also, LOVED how many female comedians came out. Really great to see more women giving it a shot. I'll definitely be returning in the future.

  55. Arguably the best mic in the city. Warm and friendly, yet challenging and demanding. Always packed, often with non-comic audience. Great drink specials, pleasant staff ... Inexpensive but not cheap - run by pros.

  56. I went there the other week and it was a pretty good mic. Mainly comics, besides one table of people who were eating. It seemed like a good environment with supportive comics...the only drawback was the length of the show. Staying for the whole thing was a challenge and I feel like it could've been fixed with maybe 5 less comics going up. All in all, a mic I'd recommend checking out.

    ReplyDelete
  57. ok mic, i mean it is what it is; but I wouldnt call it a "free mic" if Im pushed to buy a drink. Perhaps Im not thirsty. Just sayin. Call it a 1 drink mic and then I'd give it a thumbs up. Just 1 persons opinion.

  58. that Peewee guy is very funny. i like this mic.

  59. This is my favorite Mic in the city to go to. The room has a good feel to it. People will actually laugh if they think the stuff is funny, and they move the comics along very nicely. Darra is the best.

  62. I WAS THERE MONDAY NIGHT (06-11-2012) THE PLACE WAS VERY CLEAN, THEY HAD A MIC, NO STAGE, A SUPPORTAVE CROWD. THE HOST WAS QUICK. I FELT THE $ FOR A GLASS OF SODA WAS A BIT MUCH. I BELIVE THEY NEED A STAGE, THERE IS SOMTHING TO BE SAID ABOUT SHARING A (STAGE)FLOOR WITH A FREAKING BUFFALO (THAT WAS A FIRST) PERHAPS THE MONH WILL HAVE AN OPEN MIC IN THE GREAT HALL.....
