When I went to this mic, it was anything but dead. Get there early if you don't want to wait 2 hours. Most of the comics there were actually funny, including the host who was really nice and kinda hot!
The only funny comic here was this squinty guy with a shaky hand condition who maybe with some luck possibly has a future in comedy. These people all hang out together and meet up on wednesdays at eastville to suck each other's dicks until 8:45. The host looks like live venison. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Strange Mic-half in- the room cleared out- MC included. Funny group of 20 somethings-strange dynamic. After they left- this spooky/sexy girl took over MC- another group -more seasoned comics- worked out bits. Strange times indeed but worthwhile Mic.
not a bad place to get better as a comic , as with any random group of people there are a few assholes but also some cool people. there is a group of arrogant pricks- the group that other comics mean when they say "clicky wannabe hipsters sucking each others dicks".yes, they do strut in from the bar when its their turn, as if they were fucking headlining in vegas.they leave after their sets and only watch if its one of their "club member cool kid butt buddies"on stage. these are people who would tell you they were from brooklyn or the LES but actually grew up in connecticut or some affluent part of long island. i wish they would have gone to my high school. not so i could be friends with them, just so i could have watched them getting the shit beat out of them on a daily basis.the 3 biggest douche bags would be *some guy who looks exactly like screech from saved by the bell.full of himself twerp ,not funny but def a clubmember, to hear his friends react you would think he was lenny bruce. *another guy whos act is to take the mic, say "whats up bro's" and stand there in silence or just ask the audience random questions and engage them in awkward conversation. you paid 5 bucks for that? why not just talk to people on the subway? *im gonna be less harsh with the last of the top 3 douch bags. the only reason he sticks out is because of the way he dresses. he looks and acts like the rich kid from a john hughes film that you want to see accidently drive his new sports car into a tree. altho hes jewish - of course-he comes off as more waspy than the waspiest of the wasps. but he DOES have jokes. he DOES have an act that hes working on and some of his stuff is pretty good.he also has that elitist big man on campus attitude, which is why im lumping him in with the first two cocky jerk offs. im going to start bringing friends of mine to openly mock these posers and watch them cry. but enough about them. some of the other black comics have been cool and supportive, and eastville is convenient and you can always get on stage. well run , good hosts, comfortable room, decent size crowd for an open mic,ill be back in a few weeks.
This mic is good because it's a lottery on Wednesdays and apparently Thursdays so you don't have to show up super early. Sure you might get pulled late out of the bucket but you have at least a 50% chance of having half the people there. I don't know what the crazy guy was saying about it being "clicky", it seems like there are mostly new comics here who don't even know each other.
The absolute worst. I feel badly writing this because the bartender is cool, but the host is a douche. I've been twice and both sucked for different reasons. Last night there were about eight people and the host said "that'll get you on stage" to one guy who made a funny comment. Ha - As if he's in charge of something important. I met solid comedians while there but the host sucked the life right out of the cheesey event. The first time several months ago was crowded but unsupportive to most and everyone left after doing their thing. There may have been twenty people there and I went 2nd to last in front of about three people. Go elsewhere - I will.
an unfunny man goes up on stage and bombs and then wakes up early the next morning and posts immediately on badslava. Why don't you just out yourself anonymous?
Says first come, first serve, but that's not true. It's a lottery system. And it's not even a lottery. The host "picks" names out of a bucket, but only puts the names he wants up first. Extremely clique-y. Gives genuine open mics a bad name.
Hey anonymous, instead of posting the last three negative comments pretending you're three different people, why don't you just admit you're a middle aged bitter man who went up one time and failed miserably and got no laughs. tell everyone your name
I have been reading the posts, and disagree, I think this is a very good mic, the host Steve, was very good, kept things moving, before the mic started even stated that "some people have gigs" and got them up first, I needed to be out early and he got me up quickly. The lottery system, not that bad, Don't hide behide Anonymous, if there is a problem just say it. I have done this mic before and I think it's one of the better mic's in the city. Jeff
The guy posting the negative comments is Brian Gray. He went to Eastville that night and recorded while the emcee was doing comedy in between bringing up comics, something every emcee does. Brian thought he should be rude and told the host "c'mon I'm recording man!" As if he is established and deserves any type of deference.
The host should have thrown him out, but let him go onstage and do his 5 minutes during which he got zero laughs and left the room quickly after he bombed.
Stephen is a good host, he's a male nurse but we all have our faults.
Not true, anonymous and I'd appreciate you keeping my name out of things. Who are you? I did have a bad set that evening but did not post anything negative and never have. Weird attack by you. I like eastville. Brian Gray
I really liked this mic. 15-ish comics showed up and everyone was supportive. Although the energy level is not as high as some of the other clubs, east vil has a great stage setting and the host was amicable.
I've been to this mic a couple times just to watch. The setting is nice; I definitely like Eastville as a venue.
The host is an older dude, maybe in his 30s or 40s. Seems like a nice guy. Not to attack him personally, but his material is not good. This may or may not be relevant. It may be a good thing-- setting a low bar for the comics in attendance. He keeps the show moving at a decent pace, but could be faster.
As for the comics, they are pretty good with the courtesy laughs if they think you have something with potential. Most of the comics leave after their set, which I hate so much. If you have somewhere to be, then you shouldn't have come. Come to the open mic when you have the time to give the other comics what they gave to you.
If you're thinking about your first time, this seems like a nice place for it. It's where I'll be doing mine. I wouldn't describe any of the sets I saw as good, so you have nothing to worry about. There were only two sets I saw that outright bombed. But at an open mic, you don't bomb with your material; you bomb with your attitude. This one dude was literally saying after his jokes, "Come on, that was funny." Open mics are for losing your virginity and learning; nobody expects you to be good. And that includes you. Don't expect yourself to be good. This is practice. Be humble and embrace failure. Skill will come.
I was also at a Monday or a Tuesday mic here-- I forget which-- but the vibe was a little better. Do what I did and go just to watch on a couple different nights. I've never been to Thursday, but that seems to be the most active night (correct me if I'm wrong). As soon as you walk in, go to the bar and order a soda or a PBR. They're both five dollars. Tip the bartender one dollar, and that makes a six dollar admission.
The only question I have is about signup, since I've only ever arrived at 6:00 just to watch. What is the signup process? Is the sheet at the bar or what?
If any of my shit is incorrect, please correct me. I was just bored and wanted to create a guide for somebody who might be scared of this kind of thing. I know I was.
Sign up should be at 5:30. The deal with 3 comics being there and 15 comics on the list already needs to stop. Besides that, it's another mic. Host is a nice guy. There's pizza around the corner.
Agreed. You can show up an hour before the sign up time and still find a random list with 20 names on it. They need an official list started by the host at the actual sign up time or whenever he/she arrives.
The host has told me many times he has nothing to do with the sign up. The bartenders are in charge of putting the list(s) out. And every time I get there some guy named Billy Prinsell is always #1 on the list.
I have been to this mic a few times and it's one of the better ones. Not so much in terms of supportive audience, in fact sometimes the room is virtually dead. But the host seems like a good guy. Who cares if he is funny or not, he is professional and friendly and that’s rare with so many other hosts. Plus he will give you extra time if there are not too many comedians in the room, also rare. He is subtle and quiet but he runs a decent mic.
Did my first open mic here recently. The 15 or so comics that showed up were friendly and supportive. Many stuck around at least an hour after doing their set. Vincent Chang kept things moving at a quick pace, although everyone got about 6 or 7 minutes. Everyone went up in the order they signed up. There were one or two completely horrible sets, which you;ll get at any open mic, I guess, but overall the material was decent. Will be back.
Jessica is a very nice host and tries to get everyone on stage quickly. No one sticks around though and the room is kind of dead.

ReplyDeleteTough, clicky, over competitive room full of haters who wont laugh at ur jokes. A great place to practice bombing.

ReplyDeleteCliquiest open mic in NYC. The host doesn't respect the lottery system. Comics that don't suck the host's dick not need bother. Fuck this mic.
