  1. Really the worst open mic, all comics where pretty much indie/alternative comics not open at all to any other styles. If you go their do a any type of jokes that arent sexual/pornographic dont expect to get a laugh. You can tell who the regulars are and only laugh at their friends jokes, Seriously a waste of time.

  3. Look people, if no one is laughing at your jokes then it's just because you're not funny, PERIOD. If you want "courtesy laughs" then get out of comedy because you're just wasting open mic time for me.

  4. That's not true. Sometimes the room s just dead. Sometimes the energy is just bad. I've been to the same open mics multiple times and have seen good comedians suffer through a bad room one week after they had an awesome set at that same open mic. Sometimes a bad night is just a bad night.

  5. You have to admit, though, Jake Weisman is HOT

  7. Hear, hear. I didn't even get a chuckle for my stabbing-faggots joke, and that kills EVERYWHERE. I told that joke at the Comedy Store and this older comic liked it so much he asked me to go in the back with him and beat the shit out of this alternative comic. We kicked that dude's ass! He looked familiar, though. I think he hosts the mic at Casey's.

  8. So the question is:

Is R to X rated comedy what goes over best there? Just curious.

  9. I like this open-mic. It's one of my faves, but I'm just starting out. Most comics don't laugh at other comics stuff at open mics, so who cares; you're going there to get the exercise of being on stage and being in front of people. I do whatever I want there. I'll curse all I want or clean it up if I feel like it; they don't care. There are good experienced performers and there are first timers. I go there, because it's cool, it's free and it's convenient for my schedule.
I don't know the difference between alternative whatever the hell else there is. To me it's either good or it's not. Who cares what a comic labels himself as.
Heidi is the one that's hot!

  12. I only did this place once but I got a few laughs and good jobs after my set so I enjoyed it. there were some less "alternative" comics who went up that didn't get much reaction but they have horrible acts so I don't think it matters if you are alternative or not. I found it to be a respectful audience so I would go here again.

  13. Its just an open mic to work on material. And the audience is not there to make comedians feel good by laughing at them, the comedian is there to make the audience laugh- so lets stop whining. That being said, the palms bar Great open mic.

  14. In the heart of West Hollywood. Everything is extremely clean. All the shops in the area play thumpy-thump music and even the Starbucks across the street is superbly decorated. This place literally opens it's doors at 6pm so don't bother getting there early to get ahead on the list. I signed up 3rd and ended up going on 7th, so theres a little bumping/favoritism going on. You perform on a nice elevated stage with a great sound system in front of a giant empty dance floor. Expect to perform to all comics sitting in the booths on left and right, and tables in the way back. The room echoes pretty bad so if one person is talking loudly in the back it can reverberate around the room and be heard over the mic. All the comics seemed to know each other and made comments on each others jokes at the top of their sets before diving into their own material. Good place to try out new stuff, and the organic bistro across the street had an incredible turkey burger.

  15. I mean it is what it is, a lesbian bar that's been around for ages so the Improv it ain't but it's pretty good for an open mic. Never really a crowd other than comics looking into their notebooks for those hidden gems but if you've played Martys you should be comfortable in that environment with an extra $5 in your pocket as this room is free!! I'd steer clear of the homophobic material here, save that for The Comedy Store and Potluck where it's more appreciated. If your dying to do your AIDS chunk here, I'd hold off on that and once again save it for The Store where you'll probably get a development deal through Jerome Cleary's film company.

  16. YOU WILL BE BUMPED IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE CLIQUE. You can sign up first and go on last. They wont tell you you been bumped so they can keep you as an "audience" for themselves and their clique.

  17. It is obvious to everyone but Jake Weisman that he is gay. Maybe he wouldn't be so angry if he just accepted who he is. Maybe then he'd follow the list instead of bumping people.

  19. I usually shut it down the last two months of the year (a no-no according to the "go-up-every-night" group of die hards and pros that I see and that have given me advice (I'm heading into my 2nd year of doing stand up), but I'm doing stand up on my own terms. That said, after the new year it will be one of the first places that I will hit to work new stuff out and practice my best material. It's usually a small-ish crowd of comedians. Ok, I always get there at the end and go up last in front of a few people. But, i don't really care. It's free, the room is cool, they got a nice stage. It's a great place for beginners, just don't have a world of expectations ever, for anything, until you've been around a few years, and have really paid your dues. Believe me, there are many people way ahead of you that work very hard. Most comedians, including me, don't work as hard as they due, so I'll just keep at it, keep learning and stay focused on my own writing and performing, and going back to Palms Bar. And I'm really excited about and looking forward to it!
