  1. This is probably one of my favorite (if not favorite) mics in the city. $3 drink specials, no drink minimum, great venue, and a host who is delightful and extremely supportive of everyone. What else could you ask for? Also, after everyone does a five minute set, comics that are left over participate in a two-minute drill, where everyone gets to do two minutes of time in the order they went up repeatedly, and this lasts for as long as we want it to. It's one thing that I think helps me develop as a comic, because you're not onstage for that long and can feel free to do whatever. There have been nights where I've probably gotten over ten minutes of stage time from the two-minute drill, and even if comics can't make the mic, they are welcome to participate in the drill. Everyone should check out this mic, it'll definitely be worth your while!

  2. this mic had a nice sized room, a very friendly host j. welch & a good bartender. for new "comics" like myself, it seemed like everyone knew each other but i guess that's the case wherever u go. one problem was that there was NO heat! it was literally freezing down there. second problem was that the host "randomly" chooses the order of who goes up which makes no sense if you arrived early. third was the obvious: most "comics" left very soon after they performed their very average set. i understand if you're very funny & "killed" the room but if you're still clearly learning & have been doin this for years, help support new "comics" as they will learn to help support you. overall, give it a try, see how u feel, YOU might really like it. but dont expect a very diverse crowd as it's mostly white males

  3. This mic is shitty as fuck! Like alot of mics in the city the host are not booked or never get paid gigs so they host open mics to strongarm other comics for money and jokes cause they can't get paid or booked due to there lack of talent! Sure some other has been comic pops in from time to time to do time.. Of course the cock sucking host will put him or her on b4 you..stop fooling yourselves fellow Comics .. Stop paying to get on stage ..and most importantly don't get your set stolen..because most of these Mic Masters can't get booked cause they suck...and needs you particapation for money and material for a Cock Sucking session with a comic who is not going to help this poor soul!

  4. I see- so comics don't steal material at free open mikes?
As Jerry Seinfeld said, "I don't get upset if I see a comic stealing my material because it means that that comic is no threat to me, the guy can't even write his own material." (I may have paraphrased because I didnt want to steal Jerry Seinfeld's quote)
Of course Jerry Seinfeld had hours and hours of material so he could afford a joke to be stolen now and then - I have 3 jokes and if one of them gets stolen I now need another 4 years to come up with a new 3rd joke

  5. Hey, anonymous. Jay gets booked on lots of shows and guess what: the money does not go to him. It goes to the bar. If you were a real comedian, you would know how these things work. Sounds like you have only been "doing comedy" for 3 weeks, and if you ask me, I think that's 3 weeks too long. Think it's time for you to hang up your hat.

  6. the night i went the place was dead. The host was kinda jaded. If thats a normal 'struggling stand up comic' thing then nevermind.

  7. is jay welsh amish or homeless? which one is it? someone tell the host that it's 2010 not 1810. they grow these beards then think now their geniuses in comedy! go to this mic. at least you'll do better than the host, jay sucks camel nuts.

  8. hey be nice to Jay, he seems like a nice guy. (his style might not be to your liking but i promise you won't have to fuck him.) anyways, i plan on trying to make this mic again soon. i havent been back since I started comedy last year but i'd like to try it again. i cant say there was anything bad about it!

  9. Jay Welch is SALT OF THE EARTH. And he is also a very good comic. From my experience in comedy, it's a textbook reaction for a hack, insecure, un-funny comic to get up at a mic, get no laughs, and then feel like a dick. THEN try to take it out on anyone besides themselves.

Plus, it's a fucking OPEN MIC where comics go to work on new shit. Did you think it was an HBO special or some shit? Who the fuck are you anyhow?

REAL COMICS DO NOT HIDE BEHIND AN ANONYMOUS PROFILE. THEY HAVE THE BALLS TO LET EVERYONE KNOW WHO THE FUCK THEY ARE AND HOW THE FUCK THEY FEEL NO MATTER WHAT THE FUCK OTHER PEOPLE THINK.

If you had any balls at all, you'd show your shit face on your comments, but you are a slimy piece of shit, and you're weak, so you hide. Therefore, you're not even a real comedian. You have no shred of fucking talent, and that's why you're JEALOUS of Jay Welch, because he DOES. AND he's got giant fucking balls. Puts himself out there like 110% all the fucking time and DOESNT HIDE like you slimy fucks who post shit on Bad Slava like anyone gives a fuck that your mommies and daddies didn't love you and now you project your lack of love onto everyone else.

As for this fucking comment: "is jay welsh amish or homeless?"

I will tell you what he is. He's a retired LAWYER. Who gave up his fucking high-paying career to do what he loves, to follow his dreams, LIKE A FUCKING REAL MAN. Not some fucking hack piece of shit who hides, lurking in the underbelly of the internet like a piece of shit. Jay Welch has a future in comedy, you clearly don't so don't bother ever going to any open mic ever again.

    Jay Welch's beard: ALSO AWESOME.

I'd like to see what the fuck you look like, but NOBODY KNOWS BECAUSE YOU HIDE LIKE A COWARD WHICH PROBABLY IS JUST LIKE WATCHING YOU TELL YOUR UNFUNNY BULLSHIT JOKES THAT NOBODY CARES ABOUT.

  11. yea man im a comic for ten years now its how i paid my bills the last open mic i did was at least 4 or 5 years ago but i pop up at open mics from time to time and i got to say this one is not so good i dont mean to put any one down but some of the comics there act like we should treat them like stars and the host who has no tv creds should tone down is ego

  12. What can I say, An open mic is an open mic. I am truly surprised at all the bitching and moaning about the venue, or the cost, or the host, or the way you get treated. If you don't like the mics then don't show up, or better yet, run your own mic and show us all how its done. Plenty of mics in the city to choose from. Secondly, stealing jokes from an open mic..? If it gets stolen, then it wasn't yours in the first place, a joke that gets stolen means anyone can tell it, make your shit personal and that won't happen. And finally, why is everyone so concerned about what others are doing.? Here are a few tips, write jokes, get up and do 'em. Edit, write, get up and STFU, no one cares.....BTW, I have never been to this mic, but I'm sure it is as good/bad as every other mic in the city.....

  13. Every single mic at every single venue is going to be unpredictable. I had a great time at the Karma mic on Easter. Jay was gracious and the audience was great. A good time was had by all. -Paul Ketterman

  14. Worst mic in the city by far

  15. Horribly run open mic. It doesn't matter if you signed up the host will give tour spot to the first person that shows him money. There are plenty of free nice and mics where signing up actualy holds a spot. Leave this sewerhole to the filthy rats

  16. This mic is so bad it actually had a stench to it. The host has the charisma and whimsy of infantile leukemia. No respect for the paying comics... but I did get some good laughs. And the nude jello shots were fun. But I won't go back... and I recommend others not go either.

  17. Yeah this one is pretty shitty! I mean, I guess it's good in that it makes you appreciate the little things at other mics, like being able to see even a single other person while you're on stage, or not having the host "warm up" the crowd with his dull, convoluted set ups and hacky old-fashioned punchlines.

  18. This mic is actually awesome and all the haters are pussies.

  19. This mic is cool. If your material hits here, it will hit anywhere. As for Jay Welch. . . kinda awesome. [||]

  20. Comics texting, cigarette smoking permitted, no claps, no laughs, no dice

  21. This mic is good. It's easy to shit on something when you're ANONYMOUS! Put your money where you're mouth is...I've got nothing to hide!

  22. Jay is a great host and very funny. Not an overly supportive group but not disrespectful either. Not a bad option for a night with very few options.

  23. First off, I don't know where all the rancor directed towards Jay Welch is coming from. In my limited experience with him, he's a quality guy and a good host.

I did this show last night and it was brutal, but I won't base my opinions on one experience there. I will say, however, that based on how this particular show went, you better have thick skin if you intend on trying this mic.

I intend to go back and try it out again, and when I do I'll come back here and share my thoughts.

    1. Agreed. And maybe, just maybe, people aren't laughing because the material isn't ready.

  24. This is a very tough room. But having said that Jay is a great host and does a great job. You need to get your cauleses as comics. This is a good room for that. And you will get laughs when something is truly good. You just have to earn it. Nobody gets mislead here

  25. I enjoy this mic. Jay is smart, kind, funny, and a good host. He's always been fair, and the mix is interesting. Sometimes it's guys talking about their balls, and sometimes it's a very smart mix of great comics. Two Sundays ago it was the latter.

I'll go back as often as time will allow.

  26. Solid mic. Jay is a good dude with a great beard. Turnout is hit or miss - I've seen 20 people there and I've seen 8 people there, but it's a laid back room and a good spot to work out some new stuff. Cheap drinks and such.

The stage lights are BRUTAL. Can't see the crowd at all. Shouldn't be a deciding factor for anyone but you should know that going in so it doesn't throw you off your game.

  27. jay just seems miserable lately

  28. Good mic jay is fantastic but has lost his beard. If u dont mind the smoke u should be able to enjoy this mic in a crumy basement

  29. Jay got skills but is unorganized, mic doesnt really start till 730. Once the mic is running its good. BEWARE NEW COMICS, if you are a new comic you wont be offered the front pay slots ($5 not bad). After pay slots get done it goes to a lottery drawing but new comics dont get put in the hat until the last 20 mins so your gonna eat the "dead zone" when you can hear the AC running.
