This mic is a throwback to the old days. Established comics work new material, new comics perfect their old material and the occasional crackpot will get on stage and make everybody laugh with no explanation why. The host, April, is fantastic. She has great energy and is extremely supportive. The room tends to be extremely supportive. The only downside-New York Comedy Club. The place is a total dump. But once you've gotten past the trophy cases full of old candy, the horribly fake brick wall and the murals of Has-Beens such as Dice Clay and Ace Ventura (really?) you should have a great time under April's watchful eye. Bring your friends-The room rarely fills with visitors even though there's no cover to watch.
i agree, this is a pretty good open mic. the host is very supportive and maybe a bit TOO friendly. ;) but yea, tends to be low in numbers but if you see this review, GO TO THIS OPEN MIC so we can make it NOT LOW IN NUMBERS :)
very supportive. did my 1st ever open mic here, which in this case, I preferred the low numbers. If your new and weary of bigger audiences use this to ur advantage while before it builds up...April is great btw
This Mic takes you back to the old days when Comedy was fresh and new! Yeah it might be a dump! But who starts out on a 4 star stage in Atlantic City. This mic is for Beginners and for the Rising Underground Comics to polish old and new material! April the host is Fantastic! She very warm and friendly! So you better watch out who takes the stage here cause they might be the next Seinfield or Dave Chappelle!
This room has some of the best energy in the city - Ive been there with 6 comics and it feels like a full house (ok Im lying but it does feel full) Maybe I caught it on a good night but I love this comedy club - there is nothing antiseptic about it like some of these supersized comedy clubs that I heard one comic say feels like doing comedy in an airplane hangar- though I wouldnt mind getting passed anywhere at this point
This is a fun mic. April is a sweetheart. There is definitely a good mix of newbies, dirtballs, a veteran, and a psycho. I dislike the $5 cover, since there are a lot of free mics out there, but it's a club, they need to pay the bills. It is a dump, but who cares, there's a microphone, a stage, and lights. No frills, just comedy. The crowd is a bit subdued but will interact with you (even if you didn't ask for it). It's a good time.
Used to be fan, till they started the filming for some streaming internet channel. The 2 ppl filming are the in-house hecklers; april is very sweet, but she doesnt do her job as a host and prevent them from heckling with their comments. It's becoming a circus as of late....anyone feel the same?
Agree about the internet channel - as a comic working on material i might be seen at my very worst and don't want to be seen that way - it feels invasive and I know what you mean about the heckling - they don't even get up to do sets - who are these people?
Don't worry people, they are gone never to return. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then again, good ideas don't always turn out so good now do they. Rest assured their are no cameras except the little flip cams people bring to record their sets and their sets alone. Now we can all go back to working on our new material, for better or worse, in peace. The people have spoken and I am all about making them happy. I hope this helps to smooth the ruffles. xo April
Sometimes I go just to stare at April. I have a hard time getting her jokes (usually very funny) because she's so fuckin adorable. A good mic, though, and will be better when more comics attend.
The New York Comedy Club in general is a old school peice of shit, but it is a great mic, April shows up whenever she feels like it, and does a little too much time, but its a good mic and she usually gives you 6 to 7 minutes rather than 5, well worth it
To the guy who said this place is a shit hole - you must have bombed badly and blamed the decor for your inability to make people laugh. I can see you in your apartment - geez I cant write jokes with this worn out couch staring at me all the time.
to the person who complained about april. be happy it's her and not clayton fletcher, the guy thinks he's elvis, or what elvis would look like now. he doesn't smile, an indication his comedic genius is more like special ed. So be happy with april, she's a worker.
New hosts name is Dan Gutin. He gave extra time to everyone, def a good guy and supportive, feedback was available and the room had about 16 people. Check it out, it's worth the $6 for the stage time you get, we also got a free drink.
Went there this past monday February 14th on V-day. It was a guest host who was really nice. The only problem is he decided to do his material for the first 5 or 6 minutes. Normally that wouldn't be such a huge deal but all of his jokes were murderer jokes and he put on this psycho character. The whole thing just brought down the energy in the room. It would have been better suited to come in the middle of the show. But anyway I really disliked the room and this club. It was really dirty and dark. Even the bathrooms looked like the Peen Station bathrooms at their worst. None of the other comics payed any attention to your set unless you were a female. Otherwise they just did not laugh. Probably won't be going to this club to do a mic again anytime soon. Sorry.
I went to this mic a 2 weeks ago. I had low hopes walking in because the New york comedy club as you all know is quite a dump, with awkward paintings and creepy dim lighting, not to mention a lack of heating. However I was more then pleasantly surprised. The host, Dan, was friendly and support and for the most part the audience stayed and was supportive as well. I went on near the end and I'd say 70% of the audience was still there, which is huge for a NYC open mic. I'm sick of places like eastville and time square where, if you're not one of the first five you performers, you basically perform for your own shadow and dwindling sense of self worth. I would definitely recommend this mic!
I stopped here last night to check out the scene, not expecting it to be Caroline's on Broadway, but a place to do an open mic in an atmosphere that'll let me do my thing in front of an accepting crowd. -and that's exactly what I found. I'm not particularly concerned about the decor like some others are. I'm here to laugh and to be laughed at. That's all that anyone who isn't yet ready to have their own HBO special needs.
This place puts the D in depressing. Any positive reviews on here have to be from employees. I went here tonight for the monday open mic. There were about 16 comics who one by one left after they were done with their sets. In New York City you have such a wealth of choices to do your material. Clubs that actually have names on a nightly basis. This place is not even a b club, it's a z club.
It's about the stage time guys when you're starting out and this is a good mic to start out the week with. Dan and Ben are cool guys and all the comics pass through here. Not an overly supportive room as most of the comics will be reading there notes and splitting after their sets for the Z room. But so what just do your 5 and leave as well. Welcome to New York open mics.
I did this Open Mic on Friday of last week. By far the best open mic I've ever done. I love everything about this place. It's grungy and real. The comics there are great and bitter and angry and funny as hell. No feedback, but great stage time. If I am able to work this place and get paid, I will enjoy the hell out of it. For now, I'm just starting out and this open mic is the best around. It's the real f**kin' deal, yo.
This mic is great! It's my favorite in the city. They don't dick you around and Gutin is great. Also the crowd actually wants to laugh at you and not just sit there...I highly recommend it especially for people just starting out
I WAS THERE MONDAY (06-11-2012)NIGHT PULLING A DOUBLE HEADER, TO GET MY STUFF OUT THERE. IT WAS A MIC, IT WAS A STAGE, I HAD A CHAIR PRIOR TO ME GETTING UP, AND I USED THE CHAIR WHEN I SAT DOWN. THERE IS AN OLD VIKING TERM YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. IF YOU TREAT THE FELLOW UPCOMING COMEDIANS ( OR THOSE REALLY OLD ONES WHO JUST WONT GIVE UP) LIKE CRAP, AND LEAVE AFTER YOUR SET, WELL YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE. IT WAS OK, IT COULD USE HEAVY RENOVATION, I HOWEVER DONT WANT TO PAY TO GRAB A MIC.
A pre-signup environment thats somewhat laid back compared to its 10 to 20 block radius adversaries, i think all open mics pose a latent underlying competitive nature, regardless of the subjective nature, from an objective standpoint we'd all like to assume we're part of an elite sphere of performance ambience. This place doesn't have a hyperactive framework, its more relax oriented. Ventured here twice and was kindly greeted with performance opportunities as a 'Walk In' The host booming blaring audible presence and presentation is a fortissimo sparkle of effervescent every open mic needs....! Mega Magnificent Place....!

ReplyDeleteThis mic is mad cool, but nobody ever goes. Maybe it should be later.

ReplyDeletethis is a Great Mic. great place to work on new stuff. April is a good hoist. And a good group of regulars.

ReplyDeleteDan's a great host and gets everyone to support each other. He's fair and he doesn't take up that much time at the mic at all.
ReplyDeleteDan is amazing! He's much better than the last guy. Anybody remember him? Always talking about his shoes.
ReplyDeleteThis mic stinks
