Very fun, very good experience. The bartender is way cool, the host is energetic and the talent tends to be outstanding. Hopefully, word will catch on-there seldom seems to be more than 10 sign ups in a day, and few bring friends for the house, but overall a great mic to add to your weekly schedule.
A good place to work out material. The bartender is very friendly and makes you feel welcomed. This is great because at most mics, the staff can be a bit rude. They have one almost every night so try to make it. One note: The stage is in an awkward place. It faces 1/3 of the room. The other 2/3 seem to be off to the left somewhere.
Why is it that half the comics who do mics at Eastville sit at the bar or hang out outside until it's their turn? Then they waltz on stage, do a marginally funny/mostly hack routine, then sashay back to the bar like an actor to his trailer. I've been there on several nights of the week, and it always seems to be the same bozos. People-you're not getting better because you're not watching other comics. Think about reeling in your ego and trying to learn something! Or are you happy being a career open miker?
So I am to understand that watching hours of comics around the same level as me is more helpful then doing my set and having my friends give me notes afterward when everything is fresh? Please. Worry about your own material.
I went to this mic last night (the 8:00 show) and had a good experience. The host, Crystal, was very energetic and nice, and supportive. She kept things moving along at a nice pace. Almost every comic stayed until the end when I found surprising and encouraging being that I was the second to last to go on. They also have a genuine red light, not a cell phone. I'll definitely go back.
Never been to a show with a more rude crowd. I got news for you: if you were good enough to be able to do your set halfway through the show and leave, you wouldn't be at this open mic. Get over yourself and give your fellow comics an audience, for crying out loud. If I wanted to tell my jokes in front of four other people, I would've stayed home and used my roommates. And the drinks would've been much cheaper.
I am looking to do my first open mic ever...would this be a good place to start? I am comfortable on stage from acting but i have never done an stand up routine.
I agree with above comments. Crystal and Carol actually make a sign up at 5:30, and run a great OM otherwise you better showup around noon to get your name on; and even then if the hole unfunny as shit cliq shows up you aint gettin on, but hey you DID buy yourself a beautifully refreshing $5 small as crap glass of gingerale! Comix closes and this place survives?? Guess unfunny yuppies are a powerful voice. DEAR BADSLAVA: can you please post when carol and crystal are hosting; so I know when to stay uptown with the rest of the normal people. And when I can avoid this hell hole.
Lots of energy, people were pleasant, and the bartender was nice and answered a lot of my questions.
The later sessions are a bit rough as everyone is gone by the end of the first hour so you have a limited amount of people who care to listen by the end.
The host is pleasant and funny. Is it worth clawing over for an early spot? I dunno. Personally, I'm gonna move on and try to find a better Tuesday spot because the comments about Eastville being cliquey has its merit. But why bother making a clique if you're gonna leave after your set?
If you're worried about the drink price I would advise you to think about more important things. Buy a PBR and STFU. The mic is free.
Aren't all these open mics "cliquey?" That's what I find. The whole idea is just to get up there and take advantage of the stage time. If us newer comedians had a stage in our living room, none of us would need to do them.
not a bad place to get better as a comic , as with any random group of people there are a few assholes but also some cool people. there is a group of arrogant pricks- the group that other comics mean when they say "clicky wannabe hipsters sucking each others dicks".yes, they do strut in from the bar when its their turn, as if they were fucking headlining in vegas.they leave after their sets and only watch if its one of their "club member cool kid butt buddies"on stage. these are people who would tell you they were from brooklyn or the LES but actually grew up in connecticut or some affluent part of long island. i wish they would have gone to my high school. not so i could be friends with them, just so i could have watched them getting the shit beat out of them on a daily basis.the 3 biggest douche bags would be *some guy who looks exactly like screech from saved by the bell.full of himself twerp ,not funny but def a clubmember, to hear his friends react you would think he was lenny bruce. *another guy whos act is to take the mic, say "whats up bro's" and stand there in silence or just ask the audience random questions and engage them in awkward conversation. you paid 5 bucks for that? why not just talk to people on the subway? *im gonna be less harsh with the last of the top 3 douch bags. the only reason he sticks out is because of the way he dresses. he looks and acts like the rich kid from a john hughes film that you want to see accidently drive his new sports car into a tree. altho hes jewish - of course-he comes off as more waspy than the waspiest of the wasps. but he DOES have jokes. he DOES have an act that hes working on and some of his stuff is pretty good.he also has that elitist big man on campus attitude, which is why im lumping him in with the first two cocky jerk offs. im going to start bringing friends of mine to openly mock these posers and watch them cry. but enough about them. some of the other black comics have been cool and supportive, and eastville is convenient and you can always get on stage. well run , good hosts, comfortable room, decent size crowd for an open mic,ill be back in a few weeks.
I like coming to Eastville and even when it doesn't go well, even when there's three people in the audience, I get something out of it. BUT, if the sign-up is supposed to be 5:30, that's when the sign-up should be. Not hours earlier as it often is. That's fair, is it not?
I totally agree with this assessment. The mics are great but there should be a strict policy about signup times. Please either advertise the signup time as 2PM (or however early someone puts a sheet of paper outside the club door and has people sign it), or do not honor anyone who attempts to sign up before the allotted time. Today there were 21 people already signed to the list at 5:30PM. That's simply unfair.
Please strongly consider not honoring any sign up sheets placed outside the club, or advertise the true signup time for the mic.
Yes... Both Mic's are really good. Monday's are my favorite at Eastville. Not a lot of people stick around but it's a relaxed environment. Real encouraging and since it's Monday, ya can also coordinate with other open mic'rs the best schedule for the week.
I tried this mic last night for the first time, 05 Jan 2016. It has so much potential but it is not run well. I arrived at 7 and there was already a sign up sheet with 13 names for the 8 pm mic. It turned out that the 13 people ahead of me were in the 6:30 mic. I suggest you guys copy Teresa's system. She run the NY Hysterical society mic at The Metropolitan Room on Tuesday.
I came to this mic on a Monday night and was REALLY disappointed. No comics stuck around to support people near the end of the night, and most people at the top of the night were friends of the host who signed up during the previous show. The host was a nice enough guy, but clearly wanted to be anywhere but where he was. He had the same, "Let's keep it going..." between every comic... told no jokes, and left the room during 90% of the other comic's sets. I think it's actually a nice room; and this mic has the potential to be better... and maybe it was just a case of the Mondays--but I wouldn't go back based on my experience.
I too was at this mic. Most unsupportive mic I may have ever been to. Host left while every comic did a set and returned only in time to give the light. I've never seen so many comics come just in time to do their sets and then leave immediately after. It was disgraceful. Maybe do one less mic a night and work on your comedy by listening to other comics.
Great room and space with so much potential to be a good mic. Shame.
Very fun, very good experience. The bartender is way cool, the host is energetic and the talent tends to be outstanding. ReplyDeleteEastville drinks are more expensive than other clubs

ReplyDeleteDrinks are also too expensive here.
So I am to understand that watching hours of comics around the same level as me is more helpful then doing my set and having my friends give me notes afterward when everything is fresh? Please. Worry about your own material.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of ego here. You can't expect people like this to support fellow comic's endeavors. Find a way to join the clique or find another mic.

Fire Starters is a new open mic that started on 9/30/2019. These reviews are for older/ other mics at Eastville.
