Third Monday Mic at Great Notion Brewing

  1. I have reviewed Great Notion Brewing on their monthly Wed night, which emphasized storytelling. This room is more an open mic for standup, as well as a booked showcase. Let me explain. But first, the facts.
Great Notion has free parking on their premises. There are no language restrictions, but the guest host, Heather, said not to do hate-humor. So often when I visit Oregon, the host reminds signups not to use hate in their routine. Signup is first come first choice, and talent gets three minutes of stage time. The room is typically hosted by a woman named Georgia, and the monthly mic has been going on for five months.
The place where the mic takes place is in the back room. It seats about 18, uncomfortably, on stools accompanied by barrels that serve as tables. The six seats in the front row had backrests, however, so if you need to sit in a collapsible chair instead, do so. They have a platform stage that everyone can see the talent fine. On stage is a mic and stand. A second mic off to the side is used by the host to announce who is next.
The business is, of course, a brewery, and beers run $8 or more a pint. They also offer non-alcoholic drinks, and even snacks to buy.
The signup sheet came out at 6:10pm. My friend and I were first to arrive and my friend signed up first. However, she went up third, so maybe the first come first choice is not applicable after all. At 6:30, Heather said we would start the show in 15 minutes. We started the mic at 6:46 with 19 in the room. The first half of the mic is the showcase. We had talent doing burlesque, other talent lip-syncing to songs, and even a duo in costume who performed. After the showcase, we had an intermission then the open mic portion of the show, which included six signups. All were good about respecting the light, though I think the host gave everyone a little more time before flashing the light. The room ended at 8:10pm.
Guys, this was a fun room to do. I did not go up myself as I wasn’t feeling well, but I was entertained by the showcase and enjoyed the open micers, all doing standup. Whether the mic is open to music or poetry, I don’t know. But since the showcase only had one comic, and everyone else did other forms of entertainment, I suspect they would allow talent other than comics only.
The turnout of people to see the mic was pretty hefty, compared to the mic at Great Notion on their monthly Wed night. Maybe if there were more signups, the host might have adhered to the three-minute sets, but what I saw, comedians got about four minutes. Possibly more.
