Open mic at The Store is a relatively new mic, going on four months, and is run by a gentleman named Matt. This room is for standup only, and parking is on the street. Talent gets four minutes, the light at three. There are no language restrictions, but the host emphasized to respect the light and not go over your time, because the room had to be over by 6pm. When I arrived at 3:50pm, already the list had 15 names on it, and I got the sixteenth spot. We had a total of 19 signups before the room ended that day. The mic takes place in its own room, separate from the main bar. That is good. Anyone inside is there for the mic, and there are no distractions like TVs on or people talking and not there for the mic. The room seats 22. There is no stage. A mic, stand and stool are set up to one side of the room, the backdrop being The Store logo on the wall. Lighting is pretty good, but it is overhead, so avoid wearing a hat, so we can see your eyes. Anyone in the room can see the performance area no problem otherwise. The business is a full bar, and beers run $8 a pint. The room started at 4:05pm, and I saw 19 people in attendance. Matt welcomed everyone, went over the rules, did a few minutes of standup, then brought up the first talent. I could feel the camaraderie in this room. Everyone knew everyone, and the support was strong. True, attendance decreased as the afternoon went on, but that’s pretty much a given at any mic. At 5:11pm, a second host, Andrew I thought I heard his name called, took over the mic. At 5:20pm I counted 13 in the room. The room ended at 5:52pm, and everyone who signed up got to perform their full allotted stage time. I suspect the signup sheet does not exceed 20, so the room will not go over the 6pm stop time. Guys, this is a good room to do. There are no distractions; everyone attending is there for the mic. Support was strong, even as attendance went down some. Matt and Andrew are good hosts. Four minutes of stage time is standard in Chicago, and as early as it ended, you can easily get to another mic in good time to double dip that night, if you so desire.
