Signup at the 8:30 mic at Shakers is not online. The sheet comes out at 8pm, and it’s on the honor system of first come first choice. Like the 5:30 mic, there are no language restrictions, and the room is for standup only. Of course, it seats the same number – 46 – who can see the stage area well. In the performance area, you have a cordless mic and stand. I did not learn how long the room has been going on, but it is run by an affable gentleman name Darrick. I do not believe there is a limit to the number of signups allowed. I stayed till 11pm, and when I left the mic was still going on. Talent gets five minutes, the light at four, and you must buy one drink if you’re performing. Darrick videotapes each performer, and you may hit him up to get a copy of your set. Also, at some point early in the evening, a featured act goes up and does 15 minutes. I counted 21 people in the room when we started at 8:35pm. Darrick did a few minutes, then brought up the first comedian. One thing I noticed, which is important: based on the lighting, I recommend not wearing a hat. It will shade your eyes, and that’s not good. Let us see you clearly. When it was my turn, Darrick was good about coming over to me while the previous comedian was on stage and told me I was next. I did my five, and while on stage, mostly everyone was watching me, but I did see a couple of people by the bar talking to each other and not watching. In fact, just before I got my first word out on stage, someone in the back belched quite loudly. Don’t know if that was an attempt to upstage me, but, oh well. I still had a good time. Attendance stayed reasonably high. When I left at 11pm, I counted 17 in the room. Guys, this is a good room to do. It can be the second mic after an earlier 5:30 mic at Shakers, and if you’re hungry, you can bring in outside food. Five minutes of stage time is better than four, and you can get a copy of your set on top of that. Wow. Darrick is a jovial man, happy to take time out of his life to keep this room going each week. Plus, if you’re good, you may very well be asked to be a featured act on a future show. But even for a visiting comedian who could not come back to feature, doing five minutes at Shakers after four minutes from an earlier mic is plenty of stage time.
