  1. Going on for a year and a half, open mic at Uptown Taproom is run by a gentleman named Jim. However, the night I was there, we had a guest host, Lou. Parking is on the street. The room is for standup only. There are no language restrictions. Signup is first come first choice, and they emphasize the honor system of letting those who arrived first to be allowed to sign up first.
The mic takes place in a separate room from the bar. Anyone attending is there for the show. A mic, stand and table are set up on a platform stage that is well lit, and the backdrop is the Uptown logo on the wall. There are no distractions like TVs on or noise from pool tables or other games. The room seats 36.
The business is a full bar. A draft beer and ginger ale runs $13.50.
The signup sheet came out at 6:59pm. There were about 10 or so talent already there when my friend and I arrived. There are 30 slots on the sheet, and talent gets four minutes, the light at three.
According to Lou, because it was summer, he decided to start the room early. I counted 14 in the room when we began at 7:18pm. Normally, the room starts 7:30. Attendance stayed consistent with 18 watching the mic at 7:47pm, and 15 in the room at 8:15pm. I got the tenth spot, and I was on stage at 8:02pm. My friend and I stayed to support as long as we could, but we had a near-30 minute walk to the next mic, which we were under the belief signup started at 9pm. It didn’t. We were misinformed, so we could have stayed longer to support the room and still double dipped a second mic.
Guys, this is a very good room to do. I was especially impressed with how respectful talent was about letting those who arrived first get to sign up first. That the mic takes place in its own room without distractions is a plus.
