Open mic at Messy Jessy’s has been going on for two years, and all genres of talent are welcome. I think signup is first come first choice. I arrived quite early, but did not see when the sheet came out. When I did sign up, there were already five names on the list. I’m guessing they were talent who showed up after me but saw when the sheet came out and simply signed up. Musicians get three songs or fifteen minutes. Comedians get the same amount of time. There are language restrictions up to 9pm. After that time, let the expletives and adult material fly. Parking is on the street. The bartender brought out the signup sheet at 5:30pm. A large platform stage with three mics is positioned to one corner. The place seats about 80, all of which can see the stage; but if you’re interested in enjoying any comedy, I recommend sitting not by the bar area. One audience member told me he had to relocate from the ice machine to her me, it was somewhat loud. The business is a full bar and their grill offers comfort food like fish and chips (which I had, yum yum), burgers, wraps and more. I signed up second but ended up going up first, as no one took the first spot. We had 20 people in the room when we started. A number of TVs throughout the room were on but muted, including the TV nearest the stage, which might have people looking at the screen and not talent, depending on what sports is airing. I did about ten minutes of material then got myself off. This is an informal room. No one gives a light. Attendance increased as the evening went on. I recommend signing up for a later spot to play to a larger audience. I counted 30 people in the room at 7:45pm. I did quite well on stage. What people were there for the mic watched me, and after my set the husband of the owner, who also hosted, informed me of a booked comedy night at Messy’s and asked for my contact info, as he wanted to pass that on to the gentleman who runs the booked comedy night. Guys, this is a very good room to do. I don’t say that because I did well. I say that because the amount of stage time is terrific. Wow, up to 15 minutes! Yes, there are restrictions, but if you show up later in the evening, it’s no holds barred, and the room is good about respecting the talent on stage. Yes, the TVs are on and muted, but there are not distractions like pool tables in use. Even the talking going on at the bar is on the opposite side of the giant room, so it does not take away from those watching the stage. Yes, Aberdeen is a coastal town, out of the way of mainstream open mics in Portland, Olympia and Tacoma. But if you happen to be visiting, make an effort to stop in. Who knows, maybe the owners will like you enough to want you back to do their booked comedy night.
