  1. Open mic at Tacoma Comedy Club started in June of 2023, when the club expanded to their second location on 6th Ave. Like their sister club, this room has a full bar, as well as serving comfort food, like burgers, salads and wings, and even some desserts. Signup is online at the club’s website or show up and drop your name in the bucket and hope you get selected to go up. Know that signing up online may take up to a month, meaning if you sign up tomorrow, it may not be for that week’s Thursday mic but for a mic the following week or even later. Talent gets 4 minutes, the light at 3. There are no language restrictions. Parking is on the street, and it is free.
This club is not nearly as big as the original comedy club in downtown, but still seats well over a 100. Against one wall in the center is a platform stage with a mic, stand and stool. The backdrop is a brick wall with the club’s logo on it, exactly like their sister club.
I counted over 20 in the room when we started at 7:31pm. The light shining on the stage is strong, but you can see from the POV of the stage the people in the first few rows. The light at 3 minutes appears off to the left side from the comedian’s standpoint. The host announces who is on deck before bringing up the current talent.
We had 30 people in the room at 8:05pm. I went up fourth, about 7:55pm. A few comics did not respect the light. To get them off, a comedian would start applauding, even if the talent was talking, until a general applause from the room signaled the talent was well over their time. Attendance dropped slightly to 28 at 8:35pm, and you could feel the energy of the room evaporating at 8:40pm, as did those watching, with 22 in the room at 9pm. The night ended at 9:16pm.
Guys, this is a comedy club. It’s an open mic you want to do, believing one day you’ll be booked to do their paying shows. Yes, it’s not as big as their other club, and attendance was not as high as at the other club, but it’s no less a room to do. While other rooms may offer more stage time, you want to do this room for the exposure, the hope that you’ll be seen by the bookers, and they’ll take an interest in you. As such, it’s a room for local comics to do again and again, doing new material each time. For a visiting comedian like me, yeah, it was fun to do the room. (I had a good set.) Just to say I did it is good enough for me. But the local talent should do this and other comedy club rooms chiefly for the exposure.
