  1. Open mic at Doomsday takes place outside on their patio. The room has been going on since May of 2023 and is run by a woman named Ruby Russell. There are no language restrictions. Signup is online, beginning noon the day of the mic and going till 5pm, soliciting a spot on her Instagram account @Ruby_R. I did not know that, and when she arrived, Ruby offered me a spot. She had four signups online, but offered me the fourth spot, as she had it in mind to have a certain comedian close the show. Talent gets a phenomenal 10 minutes of stage time, and you also get a drink ticket for performing. Talk about an incentive for doing this room! A free drink and lots of stage time! The mother lode!
Parking is on the street, and it is free. The business is a full bar, but right next to the patio is a food truck, and quite a few people took advantage of that. Pints of beer run just under $8. The patio seats about 48 who can see the mic and stand set up in the center of the patio. The room goes till 9pm.
A musician arrived at 6:42pm, carrying a portable sound system and an electric keyboard. He played music between acts, which was such a bonus for the mic, giving the room a feeling of being more a show than an open mic. The mic took place under a large canopy, and streaming white lights came on, as the daylight dwindled into the evening. You can see the talent just fine.
The mic started late at 7:16pm, with seven people in attendance. That changed as the evening went on; 13 present at 7:35pm, a mixture of comedians and a general audience. I played to 15 people, finishing my set at 7:52pm, which happened to be the peak of the night. Additional talent came and signed up, and we had 13 people watching at 8:15pm and the closing comedian had 14 audience members watching, the mic ending at 8:52pm. Ruby opened the show, doing maybe five minutes of material, but between talent she did a minute or so more material.
Guys, this is a terrific room to do. Signup may be online, but you can definitely do time if you show up and want to add your name to the list. Other comedians that night did. That you get a complimentary drink, up to ten minute of stage time, playing to a room with comedians who watched and respected the talent performing, as well as a general audience, and live music to boot, is everything! a comedian could want in an open mic.
I mean, wow, this room rocked. I was told that the week before they had 26 watching the show; I can believe that. Ruby doesn’t only run a good mic, she knows how to make this a show. I get why she had a certain comedian in mind to close, and you felt satisfied when the room ended, like you were watching a paid room. Sure, some of the talent did not hit with their material, but it’s still an open mic in the end. Not all new jokes are gonna connect.
I am told that when summer ends, they may move the mic inside, so, unfortunately, I can’t know if the dynamics will change when the room moves indoors. But the amount of stage time and a free drink will not change, so come do this room anyway. The musician said he can’t perform each week, but I don’t think that will detract from the room itself all too much. The energy will be high, regardless. Ruby won’t let it be anything else.
