  1. Open mic at Cider Mill allows for all genres of talent: standup, poetry, spoken word, music; however, the room is predominantly music. The night my friend and I attended, we were the only comics. Everyone else played music. The room is run by a gentleman named James, who was easily recognizable, as he wore a tuxedo. There are no language restrictions, save for hate words. There is no signup sheet. Just let James know you want to perform, and he’ll remember when you arrived and put you up after any talent who got there before you. Talent gets 10 to 15 minutes or 3 songs, and the mic goes till 10pm. The room has been going on since 2019.
The business is a full bar, as well as a restaurant. They emphasize chicken, but they have sandwiches and burgers, too, and a few salad choices and appetizers. Where the mic takes place, the room seats 34. Three TVs were on, with one having some volume that stayed on during the mic. A pool table is off to one side, and it was put to use during the show, even while my friend was doing standup. There is no stage. Two mics on stands are set up in one corner of the room, visible to anyone sitting.
We arrived just before 6:30pm. The room began early, 6:51pm. James played 3 songs, then brought me up. Earlier I had introduced myself, and we were the first ones there, so I got to go up first, and my friend would have gone second had our food not arrived, so she asked to go up after we ate. James was very accommodating. I did about ten minutes, playing to a room of 9 peeps. While I did not get huge laughs, I got a lot of chuckles, head nods and smiles. I got myself off when our food arrived. James came up to the mic and remarked how difficult doing standup is and another musician agreed, saying it was the most difficult of all genres of entertainment. I had won their respect.
The chicken was very good. Badder not too thick. We listened to music, mostly cover songs, then when my friend was ready, James brought her up. Know that after everyone has performed, you may go up a second time, which my friend took advantage of. Overall, I’d say she got almost a half-hour of stage time, going up twice. We left about 9:25pm.
Guys, I know comedians prefer to do rooms geared towards comedy only. At least you know everyone is there for standup. Playing to a room that is mostly musicians can seem awkward. For one, you are probably playing to a smaller audience, but the plus side is, you aren’t playing to a room full of comics but a general audience. Again, you don’t play to a lot of peeps, but you get a lot of stage time, especially if you are allowed to go up again. I recommend doing this room when you have a lot of tried-and-true material and want to piece together a solid 10 to 15 minutes set to perform in one sitting. And if you have double that amount of material, again, this room allows you to do a second 15-minute set. That this room does not often get comedians, it will be a welcome diversion.

  2. I just called and for the 1/10/24 open mic, they said it starts at 9pm. However not sure, how sure the person on the phone was about it.
