  1. Open mic at Kelly’s happens on more than one day of the week. Their Sunday mic takes place at 4pm. The room is separate from their bar and restaurant portion of the business. They have a wonderful stage and an excellent sound system, as often they have bands playing on different nights. A sound tech was on-hand throughout the mic. The room seats about 34, all chairs facing the stage. The backdrop of the stage is a black curtain and Kelly’s logo. The lighting changes color throughout the show. On stage is a mic and stand but no stool. There are a few tables, if you want to bring food in from Kelly’s and enjoy while watching. Talent gets 3 minutes, the cell light at 2. The room is hosted by a gentleman named Jerin. Parking is on the street.
Beers run $7. I ordered one after signing up, the signup sheet coming out at 3:30pm. It’s first come first choice. The room goes till 6pm, so slots are limited. The signup sheet indicated 20 slots and I saw 6 names listed under “floater”. It’s first come first choice, and there are no language restrictions. Floaters are people who contact the host directly and get to go up whenever they show up, despite where we are in the signed lineup.
The mic started at 4:02pm with 15 in the room. Jerin opened with a few minutes then brought up the first talent. Jerin is very good at telling you when you’re “on deck”, so you can ready yourself. Attendance increased some, with 18 peeps by 4:45pm. I saw a comic arrive as late as 5:15pm and there were still a few slots available.
Guys, this is a good room to do. Jerin is full of energy, something you want in a host. One thing I noticed: quite a few talent went over the light, and sometimes, not just by a half minute or so. I don’t think Jerin wants to embarrass talent, but he did walk closer to the stage and wave the light to talent, where before he gives the light from behind the room at 2 min. Talent eventually respected the light and got off. When we left just after 5:30pm, the room was nearly wrapped up.
On a personal note, I saw talent perform and leave right away, not supporting the rest of the room. While there are other mics to do later that night, talent could have stayed at least the first hour before driving to another location, and depending on which room you went to – one starting at 6:30, and another starting at 8pm – you can stay the full time at Kelly’s and support the room and not miss anything.
