  1. The gentleman running open mic at Montavilla is Lucas Copp. It’s important to know that because signup is on FB under his account. I did not know that. When I showed up, there were already 40 names on the signup sheet. In person signup is okay, as at least 3 additional comics showed up to perform via signup. I stayed to support the room, but declined to go up as the list was way long, even if talent only got 3 minutes. Plus, attendance, while very good at the beginning of the room, decreased over 50 percent just over an hour into the mic. There are no language restrictions. A mic, stand and stool are set up. The are walls decorated with album covers. The room can go till as late as 11pm. The mic itself has been going on since October 2022, and it is for standup only.
The business is a bar, and they serve comfort food as well. I ordered a pint of beer for $5 and their chicken quesadilla. Yum yum. Where the mic takes place, there is a nice stage, well lit, and can easily be seen by the 80 seats that occupy the room. A couple of pool tables were off to one side, but no one played during the mic. Parking is on the street, but it is free. A couple of TVs were on but muted. Not a distraction, if you’re watching the show.
The evening started at 7:01pm. We had 20 people in the room, most of whom were non-comics watching. Lucas opened with some high-energy standup, and I saw the audience bursting with laughter. This lasted well into the evening, peaking at 27 at 8pm. Then, at some point not long after – BANG! – there was a mass exodus of peeps. A slight increase brought the numbers up to 15 at 8:45pm. I left the event at 8:50pm with still 4 or 5 comics to go. As I left, I saw at least 12 comics outside talking.
Guys, this is a good room to do. The audience is remarkably receptive to standup. I would, however, recommend two things: one, sign up online. Don’t wait to show up then signup. Two, be sure you’re performing in the first half of the show, simply because attendance is higher in the first half. But even if you are in the second half, it’s not like you were playing to an empty house. Even ten or more people watching deserve a committed comic. Hell, even one person wanting to see the show deserve talent committing to their material.
