  1. Open mic at Distant Worlds started before Covid, then shut down, along with the rest of the world. Eventually opening again, I learned the room has been going on for over a year. All genres of talent are welcome. Talent gets 5 minutes, the host’s raised hand or a light at 4. Signup is first come first choice. Though not a 21 and over business, there are no language restrictions at this mic. I said the word “f**k” in one joke, and it was fine. Double so because I got laughs for that joke.
The business is a coffeehouse, but in addition to various cold and hot coffees, they also serve hot chocolate, various teas and some delectable treats, if you have a sweet tooth. Parking is on the street, and you must pay, at least where I parked less than a block away.
The open mic is run by a woman named Valerie. The mic takes place in a separate room from where you order drinks and food. It seats 30 who can see talent easily. There is no stage. A mic and stand are set up, and the backdrop is windows that show street traffic and pedestrians walking by. Not a distraction.
We had nine signups by 6:55pm. Called “Geeky Open Mic”, the room goes from 7 to 8:30pm latest. The night I performed, we started at 7:02pm with Valerie telling everyone this is a safe room, so don’t heckle the talent. We had 18 in attendance when we began, increasing by two more people a few minutes later. Mostly everyone stayed to support. The first talent to go up did one song and then she and her husband left. But after that, no, people stayed to support. Interestingly, we had more comics than musicians or poets and storytellers. Of the 11, possibly 12 signups, 2 or 3 did music, we had one storyteller, and the rest did standup. I went up seventh. The evening ended at 7:58pm. Another 5 or 6 people could have performed and still we would have ended in the allotted time this venue takes place, so if you arrive late, chances are very good you’re still going to go up.
Guys, what can I say. This is a good room to do. You know where you are in the lineup. The room is not so crazy busy that it draws 20 or 30 talent, such that you’re going to be there for a long time before it’s your turn. The room is very supportive in that talent stays to watch the rest of the show after they are done with their set. If you’re new to standup, you’re not going to get heckled, so you don’t have to worry about bombing, if you have a bad night. I can imagine talent wanting to come back to this monthly mic, as it is a safe room, a room of encouragement, and attendance is pretty good throughout the evening.
