  1. Signup at Nate Jackson’s is at 7:30pm during the summer months I was told. However, when my friend and I showed up at 7pm, they were okay that we signed up already, even if they were still setting up the room. We thought we were lucky, and we both took at early spot: myself second, my friend the third spot. There are 15 spots on the signup sheet. Parking is in a giant lot, and it is free.
The business is a comedy club, so they have a full bar and serve wonderful comfort food. My friend and I shared wings, and they were good. Beers run $7.61 for 12 ounces. The place seats over 200. There are no restrictions, and it is standup only. Obviously. And like any comedy club, they have a big stage that is well lit, visible to everyone in the room. On stage are a mic, stand and stool. The room has been going on over four years. Instead of a light at three or four minutes, a timer counts down from five minutes, and comedians can see it clearly and are expected to get themselves off at zero seconds left or before.
The room started at 8:02pm with 11 in the room. The guest host, Tony Peters, is one of five hosts who rotate, so each week you get a new host. As there were not many signups, talent got five minutes the week I performed. As it turned out, no one took the first spot, so after the host did five minutes himself, he brought me up and then my friend after. We both did well, but I learned it is better to take a later spot, as the room only started to fill around 9pm, with 19 in the room. During the evening, comedians continued to filter in, and just when you thought we were at the end, another talent showed up. By 8:24pm we had 13 in attendance and 19 in the room at 9pm. I counted 20 people watching the show when it ended at 9:22pm.
Guys, this is a good room to do. I would say just under half the room was non-comics watching the show. On the signup sheet, they ask for your email address because Nate watches the open micers, and if he likes you, he’ll contact you about performing on a booked show. Sadly, he was not there the night my friend and I performed. Five minutes is a decent amount of stage time, and you know anyone in attendance is there for comedy and nothing else.
My friend and I did fine, but we realized it is better to take a later spot. Comedians came in throughout the night. It’s not as though you had to get there early to get a good spot. It is better to take a later spot and perform to a bigger audience. But do this room, if possible.
