  1. Open mic at Urban Lounge is called “Hysterically Amused” and is standup only. No restrictions. It is run by a woman named Tab Lloyd, going on since August of 2021. There is lots of parking available, as it shares space with other businesses that have gone home for the night. Signup is at 8:30, and the room starts at 9pm. The signup sheet had ten slots, but the number of talent to go up was over 12, including talent who showed up after the room started. Tab told me she does not go in order of signups, but spreads the names around. I signed up second but went up third. On the signup sheet she asks for your cell number and a credit you may have (acted in a movie, done a certain room, etc.)
The Urban Lounge is a bar, but the business had yet to have a liquor license as of this posting. Some people at the bar were enjoying hookah. Otherwise, it was soft drinks or cranberry juice. The stage was a triangular platform to one corner, lit from overhead, so depending on where you stood, the light may not work in your favor. But it was visible to most of the room. When we entered I counted eleven TVs playing silently throughout the room, showing various sports games. The place seats about a hundred, two-thirds of which could see the stage. To eat, they offered fried chicken and fries and such.
The signup sheet came out 8:15pm. At 9:05 it was announced the room would start in ten minutes. My friend and I sat in comfortable chairs near the stage. Maybe 17 people were in attendance by 9:10pm.
The room started just short of 9:30pm. I did a rough head count about 10:15 and saw 30 peeps. The host was good to ask the audience to pay attention to the talent, and during one of the first sets, the host even interrupted a conversation at a table and politely asked them to focus on the stage. Some talent performed till they got the light. Other talent did a few minutes then got themselves off. Much of the talent were recurring comics, knew the host personally. Locals. One talent came from Oakland, CA, which was a bit of a drive, and even she had done the room before.
My friend did well. I did not. It was my first room since before Covid. Some material got a singular laugh, but, wow, I was off my game. And don’t take that sentence to mean this room is difficult. It isn’t. The host is on the comic’s side. We stayed to the end, and some of the talent after me included me in their act with a riff that made me feel accepted, even after not doing well. As we neared the entrance when leaving after the show concluded, the host said over the bar a “thank you” and we reciprocated.
Guys, this room surfaced after Covid shut a number of open mics in Vegas down. Life springs forth from the ashes. This room should receive support and continue to thrive. Yes, having alcohol served would make a huge difference, and the business will eventually get one. I think, then, the laughs will improve tenfold.
Even if you’ve been out of the loop for some time like me.
