Thursday Mic at La Ca Bar

  1. I was not able to do the open mic at La Ca Bar because I learned signup is done on Facebook the day before and they had a full lineup. The room has been going on five months and is run by two ladies named Erin and Kelsey. Open mic here is for standup only. No other genres of talent. There are no language restrictions, and the amount of stage time can vary. If I had been able to go up, I would have gotten three minutes because it was my first time. Repeat comics and more seasoned comics can get five or more. The room goes to 11pm.
La Ca Bar is located upstairs. Downstairs they have a Vietnamese restaurant that you can order food from and they will bring it to your table. I must say their wings looked so delicious. Obviously, they have a full bar, and pints of beer run an odd $6.61. The bar is to one side of the room. There is no stage. A single mic is set up in the center of the room. The place seats about 62, and anywhere you sit you can see the talent. However, as uniquely shaped as the room was, depending where you sat, you can’t see the other half of the room where patrons may be sitting. Comics had to make a choice which half to focus on when performing. Doing the lighthouse – moving your head back and forth to take in the crowd – was difficult, given the division of the two halves. What divided the room was the restroom; that’s why you couldn’t see patrons sitting on the half of the room where the bar was. Five TVs played throughout the room, but just before the mic starts, they are turned off, save for the one behind the bar. A stand and cordless mic are all the talent had to work with.
Of note: parking is very limited, and it is shared with another business – a cannabis store.
The evening started at 9:12pm with over 20 people in the room, a mixture of talent and general audience. Erin went up and hosted for the evening, opening with a few minutes of material then bringing up the first talent. One after another, comics did their thing to an appreciative audience. People paid attention to the performer. Knowing I was not going to go up and because I had a flight the next morning, I did not stay for the whole mic. I did learn, however, they have a featured talent. Whether that talent goes up at the end, or halfway through the mic, I can’t say.
Guys, this is a good room to do. I was sorry I could not go up. But that is a good thing. That the lineup was full told me how popular this monthly mic is, and I was glad to see quite a few people were there just to support and not perform. Yes, the layout of the room makes it a little awkward, but certainly nothing that should stop you from doing this mic. Just remember to signup on FB the day before by going to La Ca Bar’s page.
Of note: I thought I heard Erin say she was moving out of state in a few weeks, so don’t be surprised if Kelsey is alone next time they have their mic, or she may have found a new partner.
