The night I was at Copious was an atypical night, so I’ll give you the facts that apply to all weeks, but my experience should not be construed as a weekly occurrence. The bartender at Copious, Jamie, told me the room has been going on a month and a half. They often have special events, bands, and more throughout the month, but this is the first time they are trying something consistent week after week at the same time, 6pm to 9pm, though the room can go past 9pm at times. All genres of talent are welcome. Signup is first come first choice. There are no language restrictions. The gentleman who runs the room is named Kevin, a comic himself. The place seats about 60, all chairs pretty much facing the stage. While there is no stage, a single mic can be found in the forward half of a large, black slab of flooring that took up a third of the room. Black curtains serve as a backdrop. The lighting is pretty good, as well. The business is a limited bar. They serve beer in cans only at $4.25 a can. No beer on tap. Parking is on the street, but it is free as the room happens on a Sunday. I arrived early at 5:15pm. I was the first talent there. Jamie brought out the signup sheet when I asked about the mic. I took the fourth spot. Later, Kevin arrived and introduced himself to me. In that time, one other talent showed up, signed up, then stepped out. As 6pm approached and no one else but the three of us was in the room, Kevin informed me that we would be starting after 6pm. By 6:15pm we started to talk about why the room was so empty. Well, Father’s Day was going to either keep a lot of people home, or they were going out but not for open mic. Both Kevin and Jamie recommended I leave and come back later, around 7:30 when they believed that would be the strongest attendance. (I ended up going to another mic and not returning.) Guys, I learned that on a good night, they can get well over 20 signups, mostly comics, but also other expressions of art. Kevin began this room because he needed to force himself to write new material each week to share when opening the room and welcoming everyone. I found both Kevin and Jamie two affable gentlemen. Jamie recommended I look into another room, wanting me to have a better experience than Copious that night, as I was visiting from out of state. Kevin concurred. I thought that was extremely nice, both offering to help me even if it meant I was not going to do their room. I would like to come back and actually perform one night. And certainly, I recommend you do this room when your time permits.
