Open mic at BHCC has been going on just over six months. Run by two gentlemen named Josh and Sage, the room takes place in an office building in one of its suites (#104). Inside the office the place seats 18. A mic, stand and chair are placed to one corner of the room. The lighting is pretty good, as is the sound system. Music plays between talent, and bottled water is offered, a donation dish next to it. Signup is done online, or you can walk in and sign up via lottery, names on a ticket drawn from a dish after the online signups have gone up. Talent gets five minutes, and there are no language restrictions. The room goes to 10pm. Parking is on the street, and after 6pm it is free. The evening started late in every respect. The doors to the building are supposed to open at 7:45pm for walk-ins to sign up, but comics waited outside till they opened at 7:58pm. It was announced after 8pm that the room would start in ten minutes. It actually began 8:12pm. We started with 13 people in the audience when the host, Josh, dressed in shorts, a Hawaiian shirt, a hat and zinc oxide on his nose – the attire being, “Hey, it’s summer!” – welcomed those attending with exuberance and mirth. He explained how the room works, talent will be getting the forefinger at one minute remaining from the back of the room, announced who was on deck as well as the first signup, then did a few minutes of material. Sage worked the music and timer that night. We had 15 people total when the first comic went up at 8:21pm. Not long after we had 18 total at 8:35pm, some of them waiting in a second room that is the office of BHCC. During the entire evening the audience was very much on board, in laughter, in support. One comic made their standup debut at BBCC, and it was a treat. She had a terrific experience, as did all the talent. I don’t think I saw one comic tank. Attendance was down to 13 at 9pm, but they were all in the room with the mic and not the second room. I counted 16 people when I left at 9:15pm. Guys, this is a very good room to do. In talking to one of the comics while waiting outside, he told me this was one of his favorite rooms. I get why. The support is overwhelming. The host is unbelievably animated and charismatic. Parking is remarkably easy. I hope this mic knows longevity. It’s the only mic I know of in Beverly Hills, so even comics from northern Orange County can do that room without having to deal with the downtown nightmare, despite the many open mic rooms downtown offers.
