  1. Open mic at Geeky Teas has been going on for six months. The mic is for comedy only. It takes place in a room separate from where business is conducted – a business of toys, games, collectibles, things like that – but where the mic happens, there are no distractions at all. The room seats 30 or more, all chairs in the room facing the platform stage that held a mic, stand and stool. The backdrop will remind you of a kitchen. An old kitchen. Talent gets five minutes, and there are no language restrictions, as long as you don’t yell foul words into the mic so that they can hear you where business happens in the next room. There is a $5 admission to perform. Parking is on the street, but it is free.
The woman who runs the room is Thea. Normally, there are 16 spots reserved for the mic, but Tia overbooked and asked the room for permission to lower the amount of stage time to four minutes, which the room acquiesced to. We ended up with 18 signups. The lineup is done by lottery. After you give your $5 you write your name on a ticket, and Thea draws from a bucket.
We had 20 people in the room when we started at 8:02pm. Thea welcomed everyone and drew the first name, giving the comic a moment to prepare, as Tia did some stage time, then brought up the first talent. I got the fifth spot. At 8:50pm, a second emcee, Liz, someone who had gone up earlier in the lineup, took over, as Thea had a booked performance later that night. We had 19 people watching the last two comics. The evening ended at 9:30pm.
Guys, this room is a gem. I know the title of the business makes it sound like open mic here is kid-friendly and for that very reason, maybe unruly, but this mic is not the case. Not only is the room uninhibited with their subject matter and language, but where the mic takes place, it is ideal for an open mic. That the room stayed consistent in attendance tells me how supportive this place is. I wasn’t expecting much, coming to this room. Glad I was surprisingly wrong.

  2. This is a decent room. Totally separate space and supportive crowd of mostly comics but supportive comics. At least they've been the handful of times I've gone and tried some new material out. Sometimes they extend the number of comics by 1 or 2 but usually not. I've seen them turn people away saying that they just sold the last ticket. Thea keeps the show moving. Her opening bit is usually less than 4 minutes and the show is really quick.
This is also the only open mic with an adjacent rescue kitten terrarium. FINALLY!!!
