  1. Empire Tavern boasts a whooping two parking spaces at their business; otherwise, parking is on the street. The place serves mostly beer and some wines and nonalcoholic beverages. To eat, they had a small selection of chips. The staging area is a mic that is set up to the left of the entrance. Anyone coming in or out during a performance will cross in front of those sitting at the bar. Overall, the place seats over 40 who can see the talent. A second mic is on hand that the hosts use to interview the performer after their set. Furthest from the mic is a shuffleboard and video game.
Called “The Keg Stand Comedy”, the room has been going on 15 months. There are 20 slots offered. Signup is first come first choice. There are no language restrictions. Talent gets four minutes. Two muted TVs are on behind the bar, but they are not a distraction.
I arrived at 5:23pm, and to my surprise, the signup sheet was out and already the first nine slots were filled. I took the tenth. Before the night was over we had 19 comics performing. The room started at 6:32pm with our two hosts, Zack and Ari, opening up the room, but soon one stepped down, and Ari continued to solo before announcing who was on deck and bringing up the first talent. Later, Zack would perform in the second half of the lineup. We had 25 people total in the room, including the bartender, Dave. Two gentleman played live music before the show and between talent, a keyboardist and a standing bass player.
For the rest of the night, the two hosts alternated bringing up the next talent and interviewing them with one request: the night I was there we were asked to recall our first live stage experience, whether it be a play or a concert. We had 28 people in the room at 7:30pm, 16 of which were actually watching the stage. The lighting is pretty good, but I recommend not wearing a hat, as the bulbs shown more down on your face than at your face. I went up just before 8pm. Attendance stayed consistent with 28 in the room at 8:30, but only 13 truly listening. I gotta say the people behind me where I was sitting were very noisy.
Guys, this is a good room to do. You’ll have to sit in the closer half of the room to enjoy the talent, as the back half was not that interested in having laughs. Zack and Ari are animated hosts, and I think their having a brief interview of the talent is quirky fun, and you can try to make a joke out of it if you’re quick on your feet. This room is very popular in as much as the signup sheet was nearly filled to capacity.
I stayed till almost 9pm, and all the talent, save for one, had gone up, and mostly this room still had more than half in attendance. Plus, there is a second mic you can do that same night just minutes away. And in L.A., the less you have to drive, the better.
