  1. Open mic at Willamette Ale is run by a gentleman named Peter Duff, who I met last year at another mic he runs. All genres are welcome, but if you’re doing standup, unlike his other room, here you have to be very clean. Signup is first come first choice, however, when I went to signup up there were already seven names on the list. Evidently, you can let Peter know ahead of time you want to perform by texting 971-280-2297 or online at www.aleandcider.com. It didn’t affect me, in that I wanted an early spot, so I had time to do a second mic that night, and so I took the second spot.
Parking is on the street. Talent gets 15 minutes. I arrived at 6pm and saw Peter was just pulling up. I went out and greeted him, offered to help take in his equipment to set up. The signup sheet came out 6:03pm. Other than myself, no one was present to put their name down.
The room has been going on almost a year. There is no stage. Two mics are set up in one corner of the room, furthest from where the bar is, and there are about 34 seats that can see the stage area well. The room goes till 10pm. The business itself sells $5 beers, wine, cocktails, cider, coffee and more. To eat they offered appetizers like crab cakes and a cheese board, salads, a variety of sliders and more.
The evening started at 7:04pm with Peter welcoming everyone and opening with a couple of songs. Then he invited the first talent up, which happened to be me, as no one took the first spot. I performed the full 15 minutes, skipping a couple of jokes that had foul language in it. Sure enough, there was a child in the room along with 13 other people.
The audience was very good about receiving my standup. I’m certain this room is not used to comedy. For that reason and the amount of stage time you get, I strongly recommend doing this room, knowing you have to be clean. There are no distractions, and anyone in the room is there for the mic. Peter is a good guy, running two open mics, so respect the rules, and you will have a very good time.
    As will your audience.
