  1. It’s already in Important Info, how to sign up for this room, so I won’t include that in this review. Parking is on the street and it is paid till 7pm. There are also nearby lots that charge as well. The amount of stage time depends on the number of signups. The night I was there talent was given five minutes. There are no language restrictions. The room goes till the last comic has gone up.
The mic does not take place in the main comedy room. Instead, it takes place in the lounge room near the entrance. There is no stage. A single, cordless mic is set up to one side of the room without a stand. Behind it, blue sheets are placed over the windows for a backdrop to conceal street traffic, which may be a distraction, and Harvey’s logo can be seen as well in the background. Two muted TVs were playing on either side of the stage, but they are turned off when the mic begins.
I arrived in plenty good time. I thought the room began at 6pm, when it is supposed to start at 6:30pm. I ordered a draft beer for a moderate $4.75, as Happy Hour goes to 8pm. The room seats about 45 who can see the talent well. The place houses a full bar, but you can also get limited fried foods like chicken tenders, fries, chips and salsa and a cheeseburger, at decent prices, too, as it’s part of the Happy Hour specials.
The room started late that night, about 6:40pm. The host, George, went around the room to verify all the signups and to clue them where in the lineup they are. We had 24 people in the room when George opened with a few minutes of material. By 7pm attendance was up to 30. During the night two comics made their debut in life doing standup, which I thought was a treat. It’s always special when someone makes the decision to subject themselves like a comic does in the interest of bringing laughter or thought to something. Standup is not easy.
The evening peaked with 32 in the room at 7:15pm. Attendance dwindled steadily after that, as talent made their way to other mics that night. By 7:40pm we had 26 peeps; 18 in the room by 7:50pm; down to 14 peeps by 8:08pm. Of course with less attendance, energy in the room goes down as well. However, each talent faithfully committed to their material, and one by one, everyone got to go up.
Guys, I did not stay to the absolute end. It’s possible attendance went down even further when the last comic went up. That said, I think this is a splendid room to do. George is quite the amiable fellow, and I pretty much gauged the success of the room by the experience the two comics making their debut had. If it was a good one that tells me the room is a supportive one. And it was. The comics left with a smile on their face. They had a good debut. The seasoned comics had a good time. I had a good time watching the room.
This room deserves your performing there if you’re visiting Portland. Regulars already know it’s a find. And it can be the first of two rooms to do, if you contact George in good time and get a slot in the first half of the room. But even if you’re in the second half, this room supports. Even when the numbers are low.
