  1. The open mic at P Wexford’s has a back story with comedy, but I’ll get into that later. First, the stats.
Parking is easy; they have a large parking lot. The place is a pub, emphasizing British foods but also burritos, wraps and sandwiches, even some entrees. Eight muted TVs were on, but unless you’re there for the sports and not the mic, they are not a distraction. There is no stage, but two mics are set up in one corner. The place seats over 75, but if you want to focus on the mic, about half the room will have difficulty doing that.
All genres are welcome. Signup is first come first choice. You are not allowed to drop an F bomb, and if children are present, no foul language at all. Talent gets five minutes. The signup sheet came out at 7:20pm. We had over 30 people in the room when we started with our host, Jesse, opening with a couple songs. Unfortunately, only about half that number of people was paying attention to the room. I took the fourth spot. But I would not go up till much later.
As it turned out, open mic at P Wexford’s does not allow standup till after 9pm, even though the room starts at 8pm. There was a time when the mic was receptive to comedy at any time. That changed when one comic talked about her first sexual experience while a family sat right in front of the comedienne. A family with children. Since then, comedians can’t go up till after 9pm. It used to be 10pm, but they have since lightened up and made it nine.
For that very reason I decided to work only clean. I wanted to give not just the room a good show but the people running the mic a reason to keep having comedy, that talent can be both funny and clean, so relax and enjoy the show, and maybe even down the road, if they are good about announcing at the beginning of the room to keep it relatively clean and know your audience, maybe comedy can happen anytime. But until then. . . .
I suggest doing the room, but know you won’t go up till after the first hour. However, the talent that did play, the returning performers, were quite good. You will definitely be entertained. The room goes till eleven, and I stayed to the end. I went up about 9:12pm and played to about 12 people. I did remarkably well considering the history of this mic. The host and bartender were hesitant at first before realizing I was going to be clever AND clean with my material.
When the whole evening was over, people congratulated me, and the host invited me back. I said yes.
But do this room knowing that you’re there for the evening.
