  1. Open mic at Lair Hill is for comedy only. There are no language restrictions, but the host emphasizes not to get too graphic when it comes to body parts (or function) and anything that might turn people off from eating. In other words, saying “dick” and “pussy” is okay, just don’t talk in depth about it. Signup is messaging the host, Colin Braun, on FB the day of the mic. Walk-ins are okay, but you’re going to be at the end of the list. Talent gets four minutes. Parking is on the street.
The room has been going on since November of 2018. A guest emcee, Michael, ran the room the night I was there. The signup sheet came out 6:58pm. I saw 12 names were already on it. The stage is a six inch square platform that Michael brought it. On it, he placed a mic and stand. A purplish sheet is placed behind the stage area to keep street traffic from being seen and being a distraction. The lighting is pretty good, too. The room goes to 9pm or a few minutes thereafter. The area of performance seats about 25 who can see the stage. People sitting at the bar can not see the show unless they stand. There are two muted TVs playing, but they are not a distraction.
The room started at 7:39pm with 12 people in the audience. While the stage is to the immediate right of the entrance, people going in and out were not a distraction. I was thirteenth on the list and sitting in the audience, waiting my turn. Other comedians tended to stay by the bar, waiting their turn. Michael opened with a few then brought up the talent. For the most part everyone respected the light. I ended up going up second to last at about 8:45pm. There were eight in the audience watching me and about 11 comedians at the bar. I think it would have been better if they had sat with the general audience, but they could at least hear people’s sets, and you could hear their laughs.
The business serves beer and spirits, but also coffee and a few other non-alcoholic beverages. To eat, they offered appetizers like paisano platter, Caesar salad, hummus. More substantial meals include a variety if pizzas, chicken, meat loaf and lasagna. They have a Happy Hour menu as well, but about the only thing they’ll serve on that list after HH is the quesadillas, the bartender told me.
Guys, this is a good room to do. The people watching were a general audience, which is nice, but I wish more talent had sat in that area, too, rather than be unseen by the bar. You could hear them laugh, but there was a bit of a disconnect. Of course, it is better to signup online and go up early when attendance is higher, but this is still no less a good room to do if you’re towards the end of the night.
