  1. You will have no parking problem at Santee VFW, as the location has a giant shared parking lot with other businesses. Inside Santee’s VFW, they have a full bar, but in the adjoining room they were selling burgers for only a few dollars. There is one pool table and six TVs, two of which were on but muted.
The room has no stage. Two mics are set up not far from the entrance, which, upon surveying the room, is probably the best location to have the open mic. A woman named Muriel runs the room, and it has been going on since November of 2018. Signup is first come first choice. Talent gets 15 minutes, and there are no language restrictions. The room goes from noon to 5pm. Mostly it attracts musicians, but all genres of talent are welcome.
There were 18 people in the room when we started on time. I signed up for the second spot. Sure enough, a musician opened. I played to an audience of 19, most of whom were senior citizens. I must say, they were very good at paying attention. I took advantage and did the whole 15 minutes. Some material hit; other material not so much. But they were a good audience to gauge my routine.
As it turned out, I was the first comic they had ever had. But I don’t believe that was the reason the audience had a good time watching me, because I was the first talent to do standup. No, instead, while I did make a couple adult references, mostly the room enjoyed me because I did a clean set. It made me think of how clean a comedian has to be to do a cruise ship, and this audience looked like they belonged on a cruise.
Guys, this is a good room to do. No restrictions, as the veterans there are used to salty talk. Don’t feel like you HAVE to be clean. But I do suggest, if you want to perform for senior citizens at retirement homes, cruises, or what have you, the cleaner you are the more work you’re going to get. But just do this room for the stage time and an attentive audience. It’s what all comics ask for, and Santee’s VFW delivers.
